Description
Paltrinieri Sant’Agata is an organic sparkling red from Emilia-Romagna, crafted in the historic Sorbara area of Modena. Fresh, elegant and distinctly regional, it combines the delicate character of Lambrusco di Sorbara with the structure of Lambrusco Salamino, offering a refined alternative to heavier sparkling reds. The Paltrinieri family has been devoted to quality Lambrusco production since 1926.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Sant’Agata shows a bright, light ruby-red colour with a fine, persistent bead and a soft, creamy mousse. The nose is expressive and elegant, revealing wild berries—particularly red fruits—alongside the characteristic floral scent of violets and subtle herbal nuances.
Dry and lively on the palate, it is driven by refreshing acidity and a supple, medium-light body. The finish is gently savoury and mineral, with a delicate saline note that adds definition. While delicious young for its freshness and fruit purity, the wine has the balance to rest and develop gracefully for several years when stored in a cool, dark place.
Production
The grapes come from the Vigneto Cristo vineyard in Sorbara, situated between the Secchia and Panaro rivers. Its loose, predominantly silty and sandy soils, naturally cool conditions and good organic content help preserve the lightness, fragrance and vibrant acidity associated with Lambrusco di Sorbara. The vines are trained using a double-curtain system to maintain balanced yields. Harvest takes place in the second week of September, followed by gentle pressing to obtain delicate musts. Fermentation is carefully managed to protect the purity of the fruit, while the second fermentation takes place in stainless-steel pressure tanks using the Charmat, or Martinotti, method, creating the wine’s fine sparkle.
Food & Serving
Serve well chilled at around 8–10°C. Sant’Agata is a natural match for the rich, savoury cuisine of Emilia-Romagna, including mortadella, prosciutto, salami, Parmigiano Reggiano, tortellini and lasagne. Its acidity and gentle effervescence also work beautifully with pizza, grilled pork, roasted poultry and lightly spiced dishes. Decanting is not necessary; serve directly from a well-chilled bottle, preferably in a white-wine or tulip-shaped glass to preserve both the aromas and the mousse.
Producer
Paltrinieri is a family winery with roots stretching back to 1926 and a deep connection to the Lambrusco di Sorbara appellation. Based in the Modena area, the estate focuses on expressing the character of its local vineyards through precise, sustainable and increasingly organic practices. Sant’Agata comes from the prestigious Cristo vineyard and is made under the supervision of oenologist Attilio Pagli. The cuvée has received notable critical recognition, including 93 points from Vinous for a previous vintage, reflecting its combination of regional authenticity, freshness and finesse.
