Description

Palari Rosso del Soprano 2016 is a refined Sicilian red that revives one of the island’s most historic wine styles with a distinctly contemporary touch. Crafted in the 18th-century Villa Geraci overlooking the Strait of Messina, it marries old-vine character with modern precision to showcase the subtle, aromatic side of Sicilian reds. This is a wine for those who appreciate elegance and complexity over sheer power.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Rosso del Soprano 2016 shows a luminous garnet-red hue with brick reflections beginning to emerge at the rim, a sign of its graceful evolution in bottle. The nose is lifted and nuanced, offering delicate layers of red cherry, wild strawberry and pomegranate alongside dried rose petals, Mediterranean herbs, sweet spices and a gentle hint of tobacco and underbrush. On the palate, it is medium-bodied and finely textured, with a vibrant spine of acidity that keeps the wine fresh and mouthwatering. Silky yet structured tannins frame flavors of sour cherry, blood orange, dried fig and aromatic herbs, with subtle notes of licorice, cedar and mineral on the long, savory finish. The 2016 vintage is drinking beautifully now, with enough structure and acidity to continue evolving positively for another 5–8 years, gaining further tertiary complexity and softness.

Production
Rosso del Soprano is produced in the northeastern corner of Sicily, in the hills around Villa Geraci near Messina, where vineyards overlook the sea and benefit from cooling breezes and marked day–night temperature swings. This coastal, hilly terroir lends aromatic lift, finesse and a distinctive saline-mineral edge to the wine. Grapes are typically hand-harvested to ensure careful selection of bunches and brought to the cellar in small crates to preserve freshness and integrity. In the winery, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vessels to capture the purity of fruit and the wine is then aged in oak and bottle for an extended period, allowing tannins to refine and the bouquet to develop the signature elegance that distinguishes Palari’s style.

Food & Serving
Rosso del Soprano 2016 is a versatile food wine that shines with refined yet flavorful dishes. Try it with roasted lamb, herb-crusted pork, grilled tuna or swordfish, classic Sicilian dishes like caponata, pasta alla norma, or aged semi-hard cheeses and charcuterie. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Burgundy-style glasses to highlight its aromatic complexity. A short decant of 30–45 minutes is recommended to allow the wine to open fully and reveal its layers of spice, florality and terroir-driven minerality.

Producer
Azienda Agricola Palari, based at the historic Villa Geraci, is one of the key names behind the renaissance of fine wine in northeastern Sicily. Founded with the explicit goal of reviving the old, noble tradition of Faro and related local styles, Palari became a reference point for elegant, ageworthy Sicilian reds long before the region’s current popularity. By combining low-yield vineyards, indigenous varieties and meticulous, small-scale winemaking, the estate has helped restore global recognition to this once-forgotten corner of Sicily, earning critical acclaim and a loyal following among collectors and sommeliers around the world.
