Pahlmeyer Merlot 2021 is a richly layered California red that shows just how compelling Merlot can be when crafted with serious ambition. Built from estate-grown fruit and supported by a small but important blend of Petit Verdot, Malbec, and Cabernet Sauvignon, it offers depth, polish, and a distinctly Napa Valley sense of luxury.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine is deeply colored and nearly opaque, hinting at its concentration from the outset. The nose opens with boysenberry, violets, and vanilla, followed by a generous core of ripe red cherry, raspberry, chocolate, mocha, and espresso on the palate. A subtle herbal note from the Petit Verdot adds lift and complexity to the long finish. The texture is plush and seamless, with ripe fruit wrapped in well-integrated oak. This is a wine with impressive balance and the structure to age gracefully for several years, developing more nuance and savory detail over time.

Production
All of the fruit comes from Pahlmeyer Estate vineyards in California, where the warm conditions help Merlot ripen fully while retaining enough freshness for balance. The blend is 93% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot, 2% Malbec, and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon. After harvest, the wine is aged for 20 months in French oak, including 85% new barrels, which adds richness, spice, and a polished finish.

Food & Serving
This Merlot is a natural match for grilled ribeye, braised short ribs, roasted duck, lamb, or mushroom-based dishes. It also works beautifully with aged hard cheeses and rich pasta dishes. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to let the wine fully open.
