Pago de Secastilla Garnacha Viñedos Viejos de Altura 2016 is a richly expressive old-vine Garnacha from one of Somontano’s most characterful hillside sites. Made from 80-year-old vines and matured in French oak, it combines depth, concentration, and a distinctly Mediterranean sense of warmth and spice.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this 2016 vintage shows a deep, dark, almost opaque color that immediately signals intensity. The nose is generous and layered, with ripe berries, exotic spices, smoky meat notes, and a touch of vanilla from the oak. On the palate, it is full-bodied and opulent, offering complex flavors of mature dark fruit, freshly ground coffee, balsamic nuances, and well-integrated barrel spice. The finish is long, rounded, and satisfying, with enough structure to support further evolution. Drink now or cellar through 2027 for added nuance.

Production
The grapes come from Pago de Secastilla’s two oldest vineyards, Guardia Miranda and Botiquero, both planted in the 1940s at altitude in Somontano. These old Garnacha vines yield naturally concentrated fruit, which is harvested by hand and then vinified with a long, gentle process before aging for 10 months in French oak. The wine is bottled unfiltered to preserve as much detail and texture as possible.

Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for rich, flavorful dishes such as lamb, roast beef, or festive Christmas fare like duck and pork with sweet-and-sour accompaniments. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for an hour if drinking young to let the aromatics open fully.
