Description
Pacalet Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru 2011 Magnum is a beautifully expressive Burgundy from one of the region’s most admired natural-minded producers. Made from Pinot Noir in the heart of Charmes-Chambertin, it combines precision, freshness, and elegance with the depth expected from Grand Cru Côte de Nuits. Philippe Pacalet’s biodynamic-inspired, low-intervention approach adds a distinctive purity that has made his wines highly sought after.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this 2011 shows a luminous ruby hue with the transparency and finesse typical of great Burgundy. The bouquet is refined and detailed, opening with bright raspberry, wild strawberry, and subtle floral notes, lifted by a fine saline minerality.
On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied and energetic, with supple tannins, vibrant red fruit, and a poised, elegant line through the finish. There is a lovely tension between delicacy and concentration, and the magnum format should support graceful development over time. While already expressive, it has the structure and balance to age beautifully for several more years.
Production
Sourced from Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru in Burgundy, the wine reflects a prized terroir known for producing Pinot Noir with perfume, finesse, and layered complexity. Philippe Pacalet works with vineyards across Burgundy, selecting parcels carefully and following the fruit closely in the vineyard before vinifying it himself.
His style is defined by minimal intervention, very limited sulfur use, and a sensitive approach to fermentation and élevage. The result is a wine that emphasizes site expression, purity, and texture rather than heaviness or extraction.
Food & Serving
This wine is an excellent match for refined dishes such as roast duck, quail, veal, wild mushroom risotto, or pigeon. It also pairs well with mushroom-based sauces and lightly aged cheeses that complement its red-fruited elegance without overpowering it. Serve at 15–17°C and consider decanting for around 30–60 minutes if drinking young, especially in magnum format.
Producer
Philippe Pacalet is one of Burgundy’s most respected natural wine producers, known for crafting elegant, authentic wines with very low sulfur and a deep respect for terroir. He grew up in the wine world, working early on with his uncle Marcel Lapierre and later spending a decade at Domaine Prieuré Roch before launching his own negociant house in 2001. Today, Pacalet is regarded as a key figure in the natural wine movement, and his wines are widely admired for their clarity, purity, and precision.
