Description

Ovid Red Experiment N2.7 2017 is a small-production Napa Valley wine that captures the adventurous spirit of one of California’s most sought-after producers. Made as a comparative experiment from fruit grown on neighboring parcels near Pritchard Hill, it offers a rare glimpse into how subtle differences in site can shape a wine of real depth, precision, and character.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep, saturated red color. The nose is expressive and layered, with blackcurrant, blackberry, cocoa, cola, licorice, cedar, and a classic pencil lead note that speaks to its Napa pedigree. The palate is powerful and full-bodied, driven by rich dark fruit, yet kept in balance by a fresh, firm acidity that gives the wine structure and lift. It is already impressive now, but also has the concentration and backbone to age beautifully over the coming years, developing even more complexity with time.

Production
This wine comes from Pritchard Hill in Napa Valley, a highly prized hillside terroir known for its first-rate soils and exceptional growing conditions. The experiment focused on fruit from vineyards bordering Ovid’s own parcels, harvested in the same way and at the same time as the estate fruit for a direct comparison. The wine was matured for 22 months in French oak barrels, half of them new, adding polish, spice, and structure to the final blend.

Food & Serving
This is a wine built for rich dishes such as grilled ribeye, braised short ribs, lamb, venison, or hearty mushroom-based dishes. Serve it at around 16–18°C and consider decanting for at least 1–2 hours if drinking young, so the wine can fully open and show its layered aromatics and fine structure.

Producer
Ovid was founded in 2000 by Mark Nelson and Dana Johnson and has quickly become one of Napa Valley’s most distinctive cult estates. Perched high on Pritchard Hill near Colgin, the winery combines exceptional terroir with organic-minded farming and solar-powered production. Since 2010, winemaker Austin Peterson has been at the helm, bringing a restless creativity shaped by experience in Napa, Sonoma, Bordeaux, New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, and Argentina. Ovid is renowned not only for its tiny allocations and long mailing-list wait, but also for its bold, experimental approach and consistently outstanding wines.
