Ovid Napa Valley 2018 is the flagship wine from one of Napa Valley’s most sought-after cult producers, crafted under the direction of winemaker Austin Peterson. Sourced from Ovid’s own Pritchard Hill vineyards, it combines Bordeaux-inspired structure with unmistakable Napa richness and intensity.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a dark, nearly ink-like color that hints at its depth and concentration. The nose opens with red and black cherries, blackcurrant, cinnamon, lily, pepper, and a subtle savory note of sage, unfolding with precision and perfume. On the palate, it is muscular yet beautifully refined, with velvety texture, bright energy, and a long, spicy finish. The 2018 vintage is elegant and expressive today, but its balance of fruit, tension, and ripe tannins suggests excellent aging potential over the next several decades, especially in a cool cellar.

Production
The wine comes from Ovid’s estate vineyards on Pritchard Hill in Napa Valley, a high-elevation site known for its rocky soils, excellent drainage, and strong diurnal shift. Farming follows leading organic principles, and the estate is run entirely on solar energy. After pressing and fermentation, the wine matured for 22 months in French oak barrels, 50% of them new, allowing the fruit and structure to integrate while preserving purity and lift.

This is a natural match for premium cuts of beef, roast lamb, venison, truffle dishes, or mushroom-based cuisine. Serve at 16-18°C, and consider decanting for 1-2 hours if drinking young to let the wine fully open and soften its structure.

Ovid was founded in 2000 by Mark Nelson and Dana Johnson, making it a relatively young but highly respected name in Napa Valley. Perched high on Pritchard Hill near Colgin, the estate has earned a reputation for small-production wines, experimental cuvées, and striking presentation, including labels printed on a 300-year-old Gutenberg press. Since 2010, Austin Peterson has been the driving force behind the winery’s winemaking success, bringing global experience and a restless creative energy that has helped define Ovid’s cult status.
