Description
Ovid Napa Valley 2017 is the flagship red from one of Napa Valley’s most sought-after cult estates, crafted by winemaker Austin Peterson from hillside fruit on Pritchard Hill. Built on Cabernet Sauvignon with Cabernet Franc and supporting Bordeaux varieties, it delivers the kind of depth, structure, and precision that has made Ovid a benchmark for mountain-grown Napa reds—while still showing a clear sense of elegance and energy.
Tasting Notes
The wine pours an inky, near-black purple in the glass, hinting at its concentration straight away. Aromatically, it opens with layers of black cherry, red cherry, cassis, blueberry, lavender, mint, espresso, cinnamon, pepper, sage, and floral notes of lily, all lifted by subtle savory complexity.
On the palate, it is powerful and full-bodied, yet remarkably polished, with ripe dark fruit, muscular tannins, and a velvety texture that keeps everything in balance. The finish is long, spicy, and fresh, with plenty of drive and vibrancy. This is a wine with serious aging potential and should continue to develop beautifully over the next 20 to 25 years, gaining even more nuance and complexity with time.
Production
Fruit comes from Ovid’s own vineyards on Pritchard Hill in Napa Valley, a high-elevation site known for its rocky soils, strong drainage, and sun-drenched mountain exposure—conditions that naturally produce small, intensely flavored berries. The estate is farmed according to leading organic principles and powered entirely by solar energy. After pressing and fermentation, the wine was matured for 22 months in French oak barrels, 50% of them new, to build structure, texture, and aromatic complexity.
Food & Serving
This is a wine that deserves equally thoughtful food pairings: grilled ribeye, prime rib, braised short ribs, venison, lamb chops, or rich dishes with mushrooms and truffle are all excellent choices. Serve at around 16–18°C and consider decanting for at least 1–2 hours, especially if enjoyed young, to allow the wine’s layers of fruit, spice, and floral detail to fully open up.
Producer
Ovid was founded in 2000 by Mark Nelson and Dana Johnson and has since become one of Napa Valley’s most admired small-production estates. Perched high on Pritchard Hill near some of the region’s most iconic neighbors, the winery is known for both its exceptional terroir and its experimental, ever-evolving approach to winemaking. Austin Peterson has led the cellar since 2010 and is widely credited with helping define Ovid’s identity through his creativity, precision, and deep experience from vineyards around the world.
