Description

Orlando Abrigo Barbaresco Montersino 2019 is a refined expression of Nebbiolo from one of Barbaresco’s most prized hillside sites, Montersino. This single-cru wine brings together depth, elegance and immediate drinkability, showcasing why this area has been celebrated for its quality for well over a century. Silky tannins, lifted aromatics and a poised structure make it an excellent choice for both collectors and those seeking a memorable bottle for the table. The Montersino vineyard is classified as a Me.GA (Menzione Geografica Aggiuntiva), one of the officially recognized premium locations in Barbaresco. Already described as a “position of special value” by Lorenzo Fantini in his 1879 monograph on viticulture in Cuneo, it has long been known for producing Barbaresco of notable fullness with remarkably fine, velvety tannins. Orlando Abrigo’s careful, terroir-driven approach allows the character of this historic slope to shine through in every glass.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Montersino shows a luminous garnet core with brick-red highlights at the rim, typical of high-quality Nebbiolo. The appearance is bright and transparent, hinting at both finesse and concentration. The nose is fragrant and layered, opening with classic notes of dried roses, violets and red cherries, followed by raspberry, wild strawberry and a touch of blood orange. With air, more complex nuances emerge: sweet spices, licorice, a hint of cedar and subtle underbrush and tar, all wrapped in a mineral lift that speaks of its hillside origins. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, with a graceful yet persistent structure. The red fruit profile—sour cherry, pomegranate and ripe raspberry—is supported by fine, silky tannins that are already approachable, making the wine surprisingly easy to enjoy in its youth. Fresh acidity keeps everything vibrant, while delicate notes of spice, tobacco leaf and a gentle savory edge carry through to a long, elegant finish. The overall impression is one of harmony and precision, with power delivered in a refined, understated way. The 2019 vintage offers both early charm and the structure for further development. While it is drinking beautifully now after some aeration, it has the balance and tannic backbone to evolve gracefully over the next 8–12 years, gaining additional complexity in the form of dried fruit, leather and truffle notes.

Production
The Montersino vineyard lies on the hills of Barbaresco in Piemonte, benefiting from calcareous clay and marl soils that are ideal for Nebbiolo. The combination of well-drained slopes, good sun exposure and cool nights helps to build aromatic complexity while preserving acidity and finesse. Orlando Abrigo works with careful vineyard management, typically harvesting by hand to ensure that only healthy, optimally ripe Nebbiolo bunches are selected. In the cellar, the grapes are gently crushed and undergo a controlled fermentation and maceration to extract color, aroma and fine tannins without harshness. The wine is then aged—traditionally in large oak casks or a balanced mix of large formats and older barrels—to allow structure and complexity to develop while maintaining purity of fruit and the distinctive character of the Montersino Me.GA. The result is a Barbaresco that reflects its terroir with clarity and elegance.

Food & Serving
This Barbaresco pairs beautifully with classic Piemontese dishes such as tajarin with meat ragù, braised veal or beef (brasato al Barolo), and roasted game birds. It is also excellent with truffle-infused dishes, mushroom risottos, aged hard cheeses and flavorful lamb preparations. For best enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). Decanting for about 1–2 hours before serving is recommended, especially in its youth, to allow the aromatics to open fully and the tannins to soften, revealing the full spectrum of nuance that Montersino can offer.

Producer
The Abrigo family has been cultivating vines in the hills of Piemonte for generations, with Orlando Abrigo establishing his own label as a focused, quality-driven winery in the heart of Langhe. Over the years, the estate has earned a solid reputation for precise, terroir-expressive wines that reflect the nuances of individual sites, particularly in Barbaresco. Working with some of the area’s most esteemed vineyards, including the Montersino Me.GA, Orlando Abrigo combines traditional practices—like hand-harvesting and careful, long aging—with a modern attention to detail in the cellar. The estate has become a respected name in the region, recognized for producing Nebbiolo-based wines that balance structure and elegance, and that offer both authenticity and a strong sense of place.
