Description

Opus One Overture 2022 (Release 2025) is the rare chance to experience the signature Opus One style in a more approachable, yet still unmistakably luxurious expression. Crafted in limited quantities from the same prestigious Napa Valley vineyards as the Grand Vin, Overture showcases the estate’s artistry in blending across vintages and parcels. This wine stands as the “second label” of Opus One, but in quality and character it easily competes with many flagship Napa reds.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Overture 2022 reveals a deep, vibrant garnet color with youthful purple hues at the rim, hinting at its energy and concentration. The nose opens with layers of ripe blackcurrant, black cherry, and plum, supported by notes of violet, graphite, cedar, and warm baking spices from carefully judged oak aging. Hints of cocoa, tobacco leaf, and dried herbs gradually emerge as the wine takes on air. On the palate, Overture is plush yet poised, with a silky texture and finely woven tannins that speak to both the quality of the fruit and the precision of the winemaking. Flavors of cassis, dark cherry, and blackberry are wrapped in nuances of mocha, vanilla bean, and savory spice, leading to a long, harmonious finish marked by freshness and refined oak. While crafted to be more accessible on release than the flagship Opus One, this wine still has the structure to evolve beautifully over the next 8–12 years, gaining complexity and polish in the bottle.

Production
Overture is sourced from Opus One’s estate vineyards in Napa Valley’s famed Oakville AVA, a terroir defined by well-drained alluvial soils, warm days, and cooling evening breezes from the San Pablo Bay. These conditions allow for slow, even ripening of Bordeaux varieties, concentrating flavor while preserving natural acidity. Grapes are harvested by hand in small lots at optimal ripeness, with precise selection both in the vineyard and at the winery. Vinification follows the meticulous standards of Opus One: fermentation in temperature-controlled vessels, gentle extraction to preserve elegance, and extended aging in French oak barrels. Overture is unique in that it is blended from multiple vintages and lots, allowing the winemaking team to craft a consistently opulent, balanced wine that captures the timeless house style rather than a single harvest snapshot.

Food & Serving
Opus One Overture 2022 is a versatile yet sophisticated partner at the table, ideally suited to refined dishes featuring high-quality ingredients. It pairs beautifully with grilled ribeye, roast lamb with rosemary, duck breast, or slow-braised short ribs; it also complements truffle risotto, wild mushroom dishes, and aged cheeses such as Comté or aged Gouda. For best enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (60–65°F). Decanting for 45–60 minutes before serving allows the aromatics to fully unfurl and the tannins to soften, especially in the wine’s first few years after release.

Producer
Opus One was founded in 1978 as a groundbreaking collaboration between Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Château Mouton Rothschild and Napa Valley pioneer Robert Mondavi. Their vision was to marry the heritage and precision of Bordeaux with the power and sunshine of California, creating a single, world-class wine from Napa’s Oakville AVA. Over the decades, Opus One has become one of the most iconic names in American wine, helping to define Napa Valley’s reputation for age-worthy, Bordeaux-style blends. Overture was introduced as a complementary cuvée, offering access to the estate’s style in a more immediately approachable form, while still reflecting the same vineyards, craftsmanship, and relentless pursuit of quality that have made Opus One a benchmark in the region.
