Description
Opus One 2022 is the latest release from one of Napa Valley’s most iconic and sought‑after wines—a benchmark Cabernet-based blend that seamlessly marries power and polish. Crafted in very limited quantities, this vintage continues the tradition of Franco‑American finesse that has defined Opus One since its founding by Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Robert Mondavi. The 2022 shows the estate’s signature depth and elegance, while reflecting the warmth and intensity of the vintage in a beautifully balanced way.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Opus One 2022 presents a deep, youthful ruby to opaque purple hue, with vibrant staining on the rim that hints at its concentration and longevity. The nose opens with layers of blackcurrant, ripe blackberry, and black cherry, followed by notes of violet, graphite, cedar, and fine tobacco, along with subtle accents of dark chocolate, espresso, and baking spices from carefully integrated French oak.
On the palate, the wine is full‑bodied yet impeccably composed, with a silken texture and precise, fine‑grained tannins. Dense core flavors of cassis, plum, and black cherry are lifted by hints of red currant, fresh lavender, and crushed herbs, finishing with notes of cocoa, pencil shavings, and a touch of savory earth. The acidity is vibrant but not sharp, giving the wine both freshness and length. While already impressive in its youth after a suitable decant, the 2022 Opus One will benefit from cellaring and has excellent aging potential—expect it to evolve gracefully over 15–25 years, gaining complexity and tertiary nuances of leather, cigar box, and truffle.
Production
Opus One is sourced from the estate’s meticulously farmed vineyards in Napa Valley’s famed Oakville AVA, where gravelly, well‑drained soils and a warm, sunny climate provide ideal conditions for Bordeaux varieties. The blend is typically dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec, with each parcel harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, often in the cool of early morning to preserve freshness and aromatics. In the cellar, lots are vinified separately in temperature‑controlled stainless steel tanks, with careful maceration to extract color, flavor, and fine tannins without harshness. After fermentation, the wine is aged in new French oak barrels (predominantly from top coopers) for around 18–20 months, followed by additional bottle aging before release, ensuring a harmonious integration of fruit, structure, and oak.
Food & Serving
Opus One 2022 is a natural partner for refined, richly flavored dishes such as dry‑aged ribeye, rack of lamb with rosemary, beef Wellington, or veal chops with wild mushrooms. It also pairs beautifully with game birds, truffle‑infused dishes, and aged hard cheeses like Comté, Parmigiano‑Reggiano, or mature Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–65°F) in generous Bordeaux stems to allow the wine to fully express its aromatics. For current drinking, decanting for 1.5–2 hours is recommended to soften the youthful tannins and open the bouquet; as the wine matures in bottle, shorter decanting times will be sufficient.
Producer
Opus One was founded in 1978 as a visionary joint venture between Napa Valley pioneer Robert Mondavi and Bordeaux legend Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Château Mouton Rothschild. Their goal was to create a single, ultra‑premium wine that combined the best of Napa’s sun‑drenched fruit with the tradition and precision of First Growth Bordeaux. Located in Oakville, at the heart of Napa Valley, Opus One quickly became one of California’s most prestigious and collectible wines, helping to cement the region’s global reputation for world‑class Cabernet blends. Today, the estate continues that legacy with fastidious vineyard management, meticulous selection, and a philosophy of uncompromising quality, making each vintage—like the 2022—a highly anticipated release among serious collectors and fine‑wine enthusiasts.
