Description
Opus One 2019 is one of California’s most iconic luxury red wines, a seamless expression of Napa Valley Cabernet crafted with unmistakable precision and polish. Born from the legendary partnership between Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Robert Mondavi, it remains a benchmark for Bordeaux-style wine in the New World.
Tasting Notes
Deep garnet-purple in the glass, the 2019 vintage opens with an expressive nose of Black Forest cake, Morello cherries, mulberries, and fresh blackcurrants, layered with notes of licorice, wilted roses, Sichuan pepper, and iron ore. It is full-bodied and richly textured, with juicy black, blue, and red fruits wrapped in velvety tannins and lifted by a fresh, focused line of acidity.
The finish is long and compelling, showing a distinct earthy, mineral edge that adds sophistication and depth. This is a wine with excellent aging potential and should develop beautifully over many years in bottle.
Production
The grapes come from four distinctive parcels in the Oakville district of Napa Valley, a region prized for its ability to produce world-class Bordeaux varieties. The blend is always led by Cabernet Sauvignon, with Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Malbec contributing complexity; all fruit is hand-harvested and carefully sorted both in the vineyard and again in the cellar after de-stemming.
Fermentation is followed by around 18 days of skin contact, and the wine is then matured for 18 months in new French oak barrels before being fined with fresh egg whites and bottled.
Food & Serving
This is a superb match for premium beef dishes such as filet mignon, ribeye, or slow-braised short ribs, as well as lamb, duck, and rich mushroom-based dishes. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for 1–2 hours if drinking young to allow the wine to fully open and show its layered aromatic complexity.
Producer
Opus One was founded through the historic collaboration between Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Robert Mondavi, who first met in 1970 and created the first vintage in 1979. Released commercially in 1982, when both the 1979 and 1980 vintages were launched together, it quickly became a cult wine and one of the most celebrated names in California.
Today, Opus One is regarded as one of Napa Valley’s most prestigious estates, consistently producing highly sought-after wines with remarkable finesse, structure, and aging potential. In recent vintages especially, the estate has gained renewed acclaim for the brilliance and consistency of its wines.
