Description

Opus One is one of California’s most iconic red wines, born from the legendary partnership between Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Robert Mondavi. The 2003 vintage reflects the estate’s Bordeaux-inspired style, combining Napa Valley richness with Old World structure and finesse.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep, dark ruby core with the concentration you would expect from a serious Napa Cabernet blend. The nose opens with crème de cassis, cedarwood, spice box, and a subtle hint of white chocolate, all framed by elegant oak and earthy complexity. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and layered, with ripe black fruit at the center and a firm tannic backbone that gives the wine a slightly austere edge in youth. The 2003 vintage offers impressive depth and length, and while it is already expressive, it still has the structure to develop further with careful cellaring.

Production
The grapes come from four distinct parcels in the Oakville district of Napa Valley, a terroir particularly well suited to Bordeaux varieties. The fruit is hand-harvested and rigorously sorted both in the vineyard and again in the cellar after destemming. Fermentation includes around 18 days of skin contact, followed by 18 months of maturation in new French oak, before the wine is fined with fresh egg whites and bottled.

Food & Serving
This is a wine for rich dishes such as grilled ribeye, lamb rack, beef tenderloin, or slow-braised short ribs, as well as aged hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decanting for several hours is recommended to allow the wine to open and soften its tannins.

Producer
Opus One was created through the historic collaboration between Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Robert Mondavi, who first met in 1970 and released the inaugural vintages in the early 1980s. Since then, the estate has become one of California’s most prestigious cult wineries, known for producing Bordeaux-style wines of remarkable ambition, precision, and global acclaim.
