Description
Opus One 1982 is one of California’s most iconic red wines, born from the legendary partnership between Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Robert Mondavi. First released in 1982, it helped define the modern cult Cabernet from Napa Valley and remains a benchmark for ambition, precision, and prestige.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Opus One typically shows a deep, polished garnet color with the kind of clarity and concentration expected from a great Napa Cabernet-based wine. With age, the wine develops a more complex aromatic profile, moving from dark blackcurrant, plum, and cedar toward notes of tobacco, leather, dried herbs, graphite, and sweet spice.
On the palate, it is known for its layered structure, refined tannins, and long, resonant finish. Cabernet Sauvignon usually leads the blend, supported by Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Malbec, bringing both power and finesse. A well-stored 1982 bottle may now be at or near peak maturity, offering complexity over sheer fruit, with further aging potential depending on provenance and storage.
Production
The grapes come from four unique parcels in Napa Valley’s Oakville district, a terroir widely regarded as one of California’s finest for Bordeaux varieties. Fruit is hand-harvested and carefully sorted both in the vineyard and again in the cellar after destemming, ensuring only the best berries make it into the final blend. Fermentation includes around 18 days of skin contact, followed by 18 months of maturation in new French oak barrels and clarification with fresh egg whites before bottling.
Food & Serving
Opus One pairs beautifully with prime rib, filet mignon, roast lamb, venison, or truffle-infused dishes, as well as aged hard cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C, and if the bottle is in very good condition, decant gently for 30–60 minutes to help the wine open while preserving its mature aromatics.
Producer
Opus One was created through the collaboration of Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Château Mouton Rothschild and Robert Mondavi, two towering figures in the wine world who met in 1970 and joined forces to produce a great Napa Valley wine. The estate quickly became one of California’s most celebrated labels and a true cult wine, admired for its quality, consistency, and international prestige.
