Description
Olivier Horiot’s Rosé des Riceys En Valingrain 2019 is a rare and highly individual Champagne from one of the most characterful corners of the region. Produced from the historic Riceys appellation, it offers a distinctive, terroir-driven expression that stands apart from more familiar Champagne styles, combining finesse, depth, and a sense of place rooted in local tradition.
Tasting Notes
Pale copper-rose in the glass, it shows a refined and expressive bouquet with notes of wild strawberries, red cherries, dried rose petals, citrus peel, and subtle spice. With air, more complex hints of herbs, earthy minerality, and a gentle vinous character begin to emerge.
On the palate, it is elegant and precise, with bright red fruit, crisp acidity, and a layered, lightly structured texture that gives it more depth than a classic rosé Champagne. The finish is long and dry, with mineral tension and a quietly persistent red-fruited core. This is a wine that can be enjoyed now for its freshness and complexity, but it also has the balance to develop further in bottle over the coming years.
Production
Sourced from the En Valingrain parcel in Les Riceys, a village known for its unique chalk and limestone soils and its long history of producing Rosé des Riceys, the wine reflects a cool-climate terroir with strong mineral influence. Harvested by hand, the fruit is typically selected with great care to preserve precision and site expression.
Vinification is carried out with a light-touch approach that aims to capture the character of the grape and the parcel rather than heavy winemaking influence. The result is a wine that bridges the world of Champagne and still rosé, with freshness, structure, and a distinctive sense of authenticity.
Food & Serving
Serve chilled at around 8–10°C to preserve freshness while allowing the aromatics to open up. It is an excellent match for duck breast, charcuterie, roast poultry, salmon, mushroom dishes, or soft-ripened cheeses, and it can also work beautifully with refined Mediterranean cuisine. Decanting is not usually necessary, though a brief splash in the glass can help release its aromatics if served young.
Producer
Horiot Olivier et Serge is a respected family producer in the Côte des Bar, closely associated with the artisanal and terroir-focused movement in Champagne. Olivier Horiot has earned a strong reputation for championing the identity of Les Riceys and for crafting wines that highlight parcel-by-parcel distinction rather than a uniform house style. The domaine is especially notable for helping bring renewed attention to the rare Rosé des Riceys tradition, one of Champagne’s most historic and distinctive expressions.
