Description
Ojai Vineyard Syrah Roll Ranch 2015 is a distinctive Santa Barbara Syrah that balances richness with freshness, thanks to a small touch of Viognier and careful aging in French oak. From a warm vintage, it shows both immediate appeal and the structure to develop further in bottle.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Syrah is deep and concentrated, reflecting the warmth of the 2015 vintage. The nose opens with dark cherry, plum, apricot, violet, blueberry, cracked pepper, lavender, and dried herbs, while the palate layers in mocha, allspice, and sage over a firm, silky frame.
Despite its generous fruit, the wine remains impeccably balanced, with a medium to full body and a clear tannic grip. It is enjoyable now for its expressive fruit and savory complexity, but it also has the structure and depth to age gracefully over the coming years.
Production
Roll Ranch lies just outside Ojai in California’s Santa Barbara County, where the cooler site helps preserve balance and terroir expression. The wine is made primarily from Syrah with 2% Viognier, then matured for 16 months in French oak, including 13% new barrels. Ojai Vineyard’s approach favors early harvesting, minimal intervention, low sulfur use, and no filtration to keep the wine precise and transparent.
Food & Serving
This Syrah is a natural match for grilled lamb, roast duck, braised short ribs, venison, or herb-crusted pork. It also works well with mushroom dishes, aged hard cheeses, and Mediterranean-style fare with rosemary, thyme, or sage. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for about 30–60 minutes if drinking young to help the aromatics open up.
Producer
Ojai Vineyard was founded by Adam Tolmach, a UC Davis graduate who set out to make wines that reflected Santa Barbara’s cool-climate potential. After early years working with Jim Clendenen at Au Bon Climat, Tolmach established Ojai Vineyard and began producing wine from his own plantings in 1983. Over time, the estate has become known for its thoughtful, site-driven wines, steady pursuit of quality, and early leadership in sustainable and later organic farming practices.
