Description
Ojai Vineyard’s Grenache Sebastiano 2014 is a striking Santa Barbara County red that showcases Adam Tolmach’s signature cool-climate precision. Sourced from the John Sebastiano Vineyard and crafted from 100% Grenache, it balances ripe fruit, floral lift, and firm structure with a distinctly site-driven personality. This is a wine with real depth and a promising future ahead.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep ruby hue with density and brightness, hinting at both concentration and freshness. The nose is vivid and layered, with ripe cherry, red berries, dried flowers, and subtle savory notes emerging as it opens.
On the palate, it is medium-full and rounded, with generous fruit, fine texture, and a strong sense of energy. The tannins are present and firm, while the acidity keeps the wine lively and focused. Though already appealing, it still has room to knit together and develop further complexity over the next few years.
Production
This wine comes from the John Sebastiano Vineyard in California’s Santa Barbara County, an area prized for its cool coastal influence and ability to produce balanced, expressive fruit. Adam Tolmach selects cooler vineyard sites to preserve freshness and terroir transparency, and the grapes are harvested with an emphasis on picking before ripeness tips into excess. The wine is made from 100% Grenache and aged for 15 months in neutral oak, allowing the vineyard character to remain front and center.
Food & Serving
A versatile match for roasted lamb, duck, grilled pork, or Mediterranean dishes with herbs and olives. It also works beautifully with mushroom-based cuisine and dishes featuring fennel or tomato. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for about 30–60 minutes if drinking young to help the wine unwind and show more of its aromatic detail.
Producer
Ojai Vineyard was founded by Adam Tolmach, a UC Davis graduate who helped shape California’s modern wine scene before striking out on his own. After early work with Jim Clendenen at Au Bon Climat, Tolmach established Ojai Vineyard in the early 1980s and became known for his thoughtful, site-driven approach and commitment to quality. Over time, the winery evolved toward lower intervention, reduced new oak, and organic farming practices, earning a strong reputation as one of Santa Barbara County’s most respected producers.
