Description

Oddero Dolcetto d'Alba DOC 2024 is a dry Dolcetto from Piedmont with violet, mint, eucalyptus and dark earthy spice in a fresh red frame from Alba clay. It feels lively and savoury from the first pour. I would open it for tajarin, charcuterie or pizza with a little char on the crust.

About the Wine
The 2024 Oddero Dolcetto d'Alba DOC comes from Dolcetto grown on limestone, clay and Tortonian marl in the Alba district of Piedmont. Those soils show up here as a dry earthen note, close to fresh potting soil after rain. The fruit is farmed under a sustainable certification, and the wine lands at a modest 12.5% alcohol. That strength suits this Oddero bottling, with clean purple fruit, fine grip and a table-ready shape. The cellar keeps the wine on a short stainless steel aging path. The stainless steel keeps the 2024 Dolcetto d'Alba direct, with mint and eucalyptus sitting clearly above the darker fruit. The wine is dry and carries its spice through texture rather than oak sweetness. Violet gives a floral lift at the rim of the glass. The finish carries a faint black-pepper snap and a clean steel-polished edge.

Tasting Notes
Violet leads the aroma, then mint and eucalyptus move in with a cool green edge that feels unusually clear for Dolcetto d'Alba. The palate is dry and bright, with dark cherry skin, black pepper and a potting-soil note that points straight to Oddero’s limestone and clay profile. Tannins are small and firm, giving the 2024 wine a savoury tug rather than a plush or jammy feel. A little air brings out more floral detail, and the 12.5% alcohol keeps the fruit lively through a clean finish. Drink 2025-2028.

Food Pairing
Pour Oddero Dolcetto d'Alba DOC 2024 with tajarin al ragù, a Piedmont classic that picks up the wine’s black-pepper snap and dry earthen tone. It is also lovely with a board of salumi, especially finocchiona or coppa, where the violet and mint notes freshen the cured fat. For something casual, try a mushroom pizza with crisp edges or a sausage pizza with fennel seed. Aged toma, grilled flank steak or pasta with lentils will bring out the wine’s savoury side and keep its firm little tannins busy.

Producer
Oddero works from Santa Maria, just below La Morra, and the address matters when you taste the estate’s wines in a glass of Dolcetto as much as in one of its Barolo bottlings. The family’s cellar is best known for measured extraction and large-cask Nebbiolo, a concrete habit that has shaped its reputation among drinkers who follow the older side of Barolo in Piedmont. For Oddero Dolcetto d'Alba DOC 2024, that same measured hand appears through a short stay in stainless steel and a clean 12.5% frame that keeps the grape direct at the table. The bottle speaks in details that suit this house, with violet at the edge, mint through the middle and a faint dark soil note on the finish after ten minutes in the glass. Oddero’s sense of proportion is clear here in dry fruit, firm little tannins and a savoury line that feels linked to limestone clay, Tortonian marl and careful cellar timing. In a producer lineup known for grander Nebbiolo bottlings, this wine shows the practical side of the estate with steel tank, Alba clay and a finish touched by eucalyptus, black pepper and violet.
