Description
Nittardi Maremma Toscana Nectar Dei Rosso 2021 is a super-premium Tuscan red that brings together Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Merlot in a deeply expressive cuvée. Named after the historic former name of the Nittardi estate, recorded in a document from 1183, it carries both modern prestige and a remarkable sense of heritage. In true Nittardi tradition, the first bottles of this wine were presented to Pope Benedict XVI, echoing Michelangelo Buonarroti’s own gift of "the true wine of Nittardi" to Pope Julius II and Leo X.
Tasting Notes
Nectar Dei 2021 is expected to show a dark, concentrated ruby color with impressive depth in the glass. The nose should be layered and inviting, with ripe blackcurrant, plum and blackberry supported by notes of dried herbs, spice, cedar and a subtle earthy Tuscan character.
On the palate, it is likely to be full-bodied and refined, with rich dark fruit, polished tannins and a structured, elegant finish. The blend’s Cabernet Sauvignon backbone gives definition and longevity, while Merlot adds roundness and Petit Verdot contributes color, spice and grip. This is a wine with strong aging potential and should develop beautifully over the coming years.
Production
Produced in Maremma Toscana, this cuvée reflects the warmth and maritime influence of southern Tuscany, where vineyards benefit from sun exposure, cooling breezes and well-drained soils that help concentrate flavor while preserving freshness. The grapes are typically harvested with careful selection to ensure optimal ripeness and balance.
Vinification is aimed at capturing intensity, structure and finesse, with the different grape varieties likely fermented separately before blending to achieve harmony and complexity.
Food & Serving
Pair Nectar Dei 2021 with richly flavored dishes such as grilled ribeye, braised short ribs, roasted lamb, game, or pappardelle with wild boar ragù. It also works beautifully with aged hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for at least 1 hour to allow the wine to open up and show its full aromatic depth.
Producer
Nittardi is a historic Tuscan estate with roots reaching back to the 12th century, and it has long been associated with both quality wine and cultural prestige. The estate’s connection to Michelangelo gives it a unique place in wine history, and its continued tradition of presenting wines to the papacy underscores its symbolic importance. Today, Nittardi is recognized for producing characterful, high-end wines that combine Tuscan identity with refined craftsmanship.
