Description
Nicolas Rossignol Pommard Noizons 2020 is a powerful yet finely sculpted expression of Côte de Beaune Pinot Noir from one of Burgundy’s most dynamic contemporary winemakers. Sourced from the well-regarded Les Noizons lieu-dit above the village of Pommard, this cuvée combines the appellation’s signature structure with an uncommon precision and purity of fruit. The 2020 vintage, marked by excellent ripeness and concentration, highlights the pedigree of both the terroir and the producer, offering a modern classic in the making.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Pommard shows a deep, vibrant ruby color, hinting at both concentration and freshness. The nose opens with dark cherry, black raspberry and wild strawberry, layered with notes of violets, rose petals and a touch of crushed stone. With air, more complex nuances emerge: subtle spice, graphite, forest floor and a faint echo of toasted oak.
On the palate, the wine is structured and intense, with a firm Pommard backbone wrapped in refined, silky tannins—very much in the style of the new generation of the appellation. Juicy red and black berry fruits are framed by savory undertones of earth, dried herbs and a fine, mineral line that brings lift and length. The acidity is fresh and well integrated, ensuring balance despite the vintage’s natural ripeness. This 2020 has excellent aging potential; while already approachable with proper aeration, it will gain in complexity and harmonize further over 8–15 years in the cellar.
Production
Les Noizons is a well-situated mid-slope vineyard in Pommard, with classic Burgundian clay-limestone soils that naturally produce wines of depth, tension and grip. Nicolas Rossignol is known for meticulous, sustainable work in the vines, favoring careful canopy management, low yields and precise harvest timing to capture both ripeness and freshness. Grapes are typically harvested by hand, sorted rigorously in the vineyard and at the winery, then vinified parcel by parcel. Fermentations are conducted with indigenous yeasts, often with a proportion of whole bunches depending on the vintage, to add aromatic complexity and fine-grained tannins. Élevage takes place in French oak barrels, with a judicious use of new oak to support, rather than dominate, the character of the terroir, resulting in a wine that is both serious and transparently expressive of Pommard.
Food & Serving
This Pommard Noizons 2020 is an excellent partner for richly flavored dishes such as roast duck, game birds, lamb chops, veal, coq au vin or beef bourguignon. It also pairs beautifully with mushroom-based dishes, truffle risottos and mature cheeses like Comté, Époisses or aged Tomme. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 15–16°C (59–61°F). Decanting for 30–60 minutes in its youth will help the wine open up aromatically and soften the tannins; as it gains bottle age, a gentle decant mainly to remove sediment will be sufficient.
Producer
Nicolas Rossignol is part of a new wave of highly regarded Burgundy vignerons, building a formidable reputation for precise, energetic wines from prime terroirs across the Côte de Beaune. After training and working with notable estates in Burgundy and abroad, he established his own domaine, crafting site-specific bottlings from appellations such as Volnay, Pommard, Beaune and Savigny-lès-Beaune. In Pommard, his work has been particularly influential in showcasing a more refined, terroir-driven style, moving away from the appellation’s historically rustic image. Today, Rossignol is widely recognized for his rigorous vineyard work, thoughtful vinification and ability to translate each climat’s character with clarity and elegance, making his wines some of the most sought-after in the region.
