Description

Neumeister’s 2022 Sauvignon Blanc from Ried Klausen is a distinctive, organically farmed single-vineyard wine from Steiermark. Its steep, calcareous site and extended lees ageing give this bottling a more layered, textured character than a straightforward, overtly grassy Sauvignon Blanc.

Tasting Notes
The nose leans towards yellow fruit, with notes of greengage plum and Galia melon, subtle smoky and aromatic spice nuances, and only a restrained green edge. A hint of light red-berry fruit adds further complexity. On the palate, it is layered, substantial and confidently structured, with darkly spiced citrus fruit, lively fine acidity and a pronounced, grippy finish. Its concentration and structure should allow it to develop further in the bottle, though no specific drinking window is provided.

Production
Ried Klausen is a steep, east- to southeast-facing ridge reaching 334 metres, with slopes of up to 65%. Its sparse soils include sandstone, shell limestone and, in places, highly calcareous sediments. The 15- to 30-year-old vines have been farmed organically since 2013. After selective hand harvesting, the grapes underwent an 18-hour maceration and spontaneous fermentation in large, old oak barrels, followed by 18 months on the lees.

Try it with grilled or roasted fish, shellfish, or poultry, and dishes featuring fresh herbs or citrus that complement its lively acidity and layered fruit. Serve lightly chilled, around 10–12°C; a brief decant can help open up its smoky, savoury aromas.
