Description
Nervi-Conterno Vigna Valferana Gattinara 2020 in magnum format is a stunning expression of northern Piedmont Nebbiolo, captured from one of Gattinara’s most prized crus. This vintage is defined by its luminous precision and an almost electric sense of minerality that speaks directly of its volcanic origins. Offered here in a 1.5 L magnum, it promises both an elevated drinking experience now and superb development over time.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Vigna Valferana shows a shimmering, transparent ruby garnet typical of top Nebbiolo from the Alto Piemonte, with a hint of brick at the rim that will deepen with age. The bouquet is strikingly mineral from the outset: iron filings, cold volcanic stone and crushed red rock are layered with wild strawberry, dried cherry, blood orange zest and rose petals, alongside hints of liquorice, dried herbs and subtle spice.
On the palate, the wine is both ethereal and intense, with a filigree structure that feels lifted and precise rather than heavy. The tannins, while clearly Nebbiolo in character, are more accessible and rounder than many Barolo counterparts, wrapping the red fruit core in a fine, chalky grip. Flavours of red currant, sour cherry, pomegranate and cranberry are interwoven with saline minerality, iron, and a faint smoky undertone from the volcanic soils. The finish is long, dry, and mouthwatering, with a lingering impression of crushed stone and citrus-tinged red fruit. In magnum, this 2020 has excellent aging potential: it will drink beautifully from now with a good decant, but should continue to evolve and gain complexity over 15–20 years or more.
Production
Vigna Valferana is a historic single vineyard in Gattinara, rooted in poor, rocky soils of volcanic origin rich in iron and minerals—conditions that naturally limit yields and concentrate flavour while giving the wine its unmistakable ferrous, stony edge. The cooler, alpine-influenced climate of northern Piedmont, compared to the Langhe, allows Nebbiolo to ripen slowly, preserving acidity, fragrance and finesse. Grapes are harvested by hand with rigorous selection in the vineyard to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy clusters are used. In the cellar, vinification follows a traditional, minimalist philosophy: gentle fermentation and maceration to extract fine tannins and aromatic complexity, followed by extended aging—typically in large, neutral oak casks (botti)—to allow the wine to gain depth and texture without masking its terroir-driven character. Bottled in magnum, the wine benefits from slower, more graceful evolution.
Food & Serving
This Gattinara is a natural partner for refined, savoury dishes that highlight its structure and minerality: think veal or lamb with rosemary, roast game birds, braised beef, truffle risotto, mushroom-based dishes and aged hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano or mature mountain cheeses. It also works beautifully with earthy vegetable dishes—roasted root vegetables, polenta with wild mushrooms, or charred radicchio. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C. In magnum, decanting is strongly recommended: allow at least 1–2 hours in a decanter when young to open the aromatics and soften the tannins; as the wine matures, a gentler, shorter decant mainly to remove any sediment will suffice.
Producer
Nervi-Conterno unites Italy’s oldest Gattinara estate, founded in 1906, with the vision and craftsmanship of Roberto Conterno, the legendary Barolo producer behind Giacomo Conterno. When Conterno took the helm, he brought a deep commitment to traditional methods, meticulous vineyard work and an almost obsessive focus on expressing site and soil. Under the Nervi-Conterno name, Gattinara has re-emerged as one of Piedmont’s most exciting terroirs, with crus like Vigna Valferana and Molsino now recognized on par with top Barolo vineyards for their capacity to produce world-class Nebbiolo. The estate’s wines are regularly praised by international critics for their purity, precision and age-worthiness, cementing Nervi-Conterno’s status as a benchmark producer in northern Piedmont.
