Description

Nervi-Conterno Vigna Valferana Gattinara 2016 in magnum format (1.5 L) is a beautifully poised expression of high-altitude Nebbiolo from one of Alto Piemonte’s most historic crus. Coming from the cooler, iron-rich “Valle di Ferro,” this wine captures the fine-boned elegance and aromatic complexity that have made Gattinara one of Italy’s most exciting appellations. The magnum bottling adds an extra dimension of aging potential, making it a superb choice for collectors and for the table.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2016 Vigna Valferana shows a luminous, deep garnet core with brick-tinged reflections at the rim, already hinting at classic Nebbiolo evolution. The nose is detailed and expressive: wild red berries, cranberry and sour cherry weave together with notes of rose petals, pressed violets, forest floor, and a distinct iron-tinged mineral tone. Subtle accents of tarry smoke, dried herbs and a hint of rusted nail add a savory, almost haunting complexity. On the palate, this Gattinara is both taut and refined, with a polished yet firm tannin structure typical of great Nebbiolo in a long, cool vintage like 2016. Flavors of red currant, wild strawberry and blood orange are layered with liquorice, underbrush, crushed rock and a faint smoky nuance. The acidity is vivid and mouthwatering, giving the wine energy and lift, while the finish is long, precise and savory, lingering on notes of iron-rich minerality and dried flowers. In magnum, this wine has significant aging potential; enjoy now with ample aeration, or cellar comfortably for 12–20+ years to allow the tannins to further resolve and the tertiary nuances to deepen.

Production
Vigna Valferana is a historic single vineyard in Gattinara whose name derives from its iron-rich soils—“Valle di Ferro,” or iron valley—composed of porphyritic, volcanic subsoils mixed with clay and a high mineral content. Sitting slightly lower than the adjacent Molsino cru and exposed to a bit more rainfall and cooler average temperatures, it allows Nebbiolo to hang longer on the vine, developing nuance and complexity over an extended growing season. The grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, then carefully sorted before a traditional vinification: long maceration on the skins to extract fine tannins and aromatic depth, followed by aging in large, neutral oak botti to preserve purity of fruit and terroir expression. The combination of meticulous vineyard work and classic, low-intervention cellar practices results in a wine that is both transparent to its site and built for longevity.

Food & Serving
This Gattinara is a natural partner for refined, savory dishes: think braised veal shank, osso buco, slow-cooked lamb shoulder, roast game birds, or dishes featuring truffle, wild mushrooms and polenta. It also shines alongside mature hard cheeses such as aged Parmigiano Reggiano or Pecorino. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F); given its youth and structure, especially in magnum, decanting for 1.5–3 hours is recommended to allow the aromatics to fully open and the tannins to soften. As it evolves in the glass, the wine will reveal increasing layers of floral, earthy and mineral complexity.

Producer
Nervi is the oldest continuously operating winery in Gattinara, founded in the early 20th century and long regarded as a benchmark for Nebbiolo from Alto Piemonte. In recent years, the estate entered a new chapter when it came under the stewardship of Roberto Conterno of the legendary Barolo estate Giacomo Conterno, leading to the rebranding as Nervi-Conterno. This partnership has combined Nervi’s historic vineyard holdings—such as the crus Molsino and Valferana—with Conterno’s exacting standards in the vineyard and cellar, elevating the estate’s profile both within Piedmont and on the international stage. Today, Nervi-Conterno is widely recognized as a key force in the renaissance of Gattinara, producing ageworthy, terroir-driven Nebbiolo that stands shoulder to shoulder with some of the greatest wines of Italy.
