Description

Bottled in an impressive 3L double magnum, Nervi-Conterno Vigna Molsino Gattinara 2019 is a powerful, deeply structured expression of Alto Piemonte Nebbiolo. Roberto Conterno himself describes Molsino as having “broader shoulders” and more grip on the palate, and this vintage delivers exactly that: intensity, precision, and remarkable depth. Sourced from the historic Molsino cru in Gattinara, this wine marries old-vine heritage with the meticulous touch of one of Italy’s most revered winemakers.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Vigna Molsino shows a luminous garnet core with brick-red tinges at the rim, already hinting at classic Nebbiolo refinement. The nose opens with lifted red and purple fruits—think wild cherry, raspberry, and ripe plum—wrapped in floral notes of rose and violet. With air, more savory layers unfold: crushed rock, tobacco leaf, dried herbs, and a distinct smoky, tarry undertone. On the palate, the wine is vertical and authoritative, with that characteristic Molsino structure: firm, finely etched tannins, vibrant acidity, and an almost architectural sense of breadth and depth. Red and blue-tinged fruits fan out evenly across the mouth, supported by notes of campfire ash, tar, licorice, and sweet spice. The finish is long, driven by a tarry, smoky echo and savory minerality that give the wine lift and persistence. This is a Gattinara built for aging, with the 3L format further extending its life—expect it to evolve gracefully over 15–25 years, gaining complexity and tertiary nuance.

Production
Vigna Molsino is a renowned single vineyard in Gattinara, nestled on steep, south and southwest-facing slopes in Alto Piemonte, where Nebbiolo thrives on poor, rocky, volcanic and iron-rich soils that impart tension and minerality. The continental climate, with cool nights and long, sunny days, allows slow, even ripening and preserves the grape’s aromatic precision and acidity. Grapes are carefully hand-harvested and sorted in the vineyard and at the winery to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy bunches are used. In the cellar, traditional vinification is employed: extended maceration to extract fine tannins and aromatics, followed by long aging in large neutral oak botti, allowing the wine to develop complexity without overt oak flavor. The final result is a cru Gattinara that captures the soul of its terroir with clarity and depth.

Food & Serving
This structured Gattinara is a natural match for rich, savory dishes—think braised veal shank, ossobuco, slow-cooked beef short ribs, roasted lamb, or game birds like pigeon and duck. It also pairs beautifully with truffle-infused risotto, mushroom dishes, aged cheeses (such as Parmigiano-Reggiano or mature Taleggio), and hearty autumnal fare. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and freshness. Given the wine’s youth and structure—especially in double magnum—decant for 1.5 to 3 hours before serving to allow the tannins to soften and the layers of fruit, smoke, and spice to fully emerge.

Producer
Nervi is the oldest documented winery in Gattinara, founded in 1906, and has long been a benchmark for Nebbiolo from Alto Piemonte. In 2018, the estate entered a new chapter when Roberto Conterno of the legendary Barolo estate Giacomo Conterno took the helm, renaming it Nervi-Conterno and bringing his exacting standards north from the Langhe. Under his stewardship, key crus such as Molsino and Valferana have gained renewed international recognition, cementing Nervi-Conterno’s status as a reference point for age-worthy, terroir-driven Nebbiolo outside Barolo and Barbaresco. The combination of historic vineyards, meticulous vineyard work, and traditional yet precise winemaking has made Nervi-Conterno one of the most sought-after names in Alto Piemonte.
