Description

Nervi Conterno Gattinara Vigna Molsino 2021 is a profoundly expressive Nebbiolo from one of Alto Piemonte’s most revered crus. This single-vineyard bottling marries the finesse of high-altitude Gattinara with the depth and structure that have made the Conterno name legendary. It is a wine built for both contemplation today and remarkable evolution in the cellar. Vigna Molsino is an amphitheatre-shaped vineyard that captures sunlight and breezes, yielding Nebbiolo of striking purity and tension. Under the stewardship of Roberto Conterno, the historic Nervi estate has been elevated to new heights, uniting generations of Gattinara tradition with an exacting, Barolo-born approach to quality. The 2021 vintage continues the story of a site that has been prized for centuries for its volcanic soils and ability to produce long-lived, noble wines.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Vigna Molsino shows a luminous, pale to medium garnet core with the classic brick-tinged rim that is so characteristic of great Nebbiolo. It is vibrant and translucent, yet intensely colored, hinting at both refinement and concentration. The nose opens with soaring aromas of wild cherry, dried rose petals, blood orange and pomegranate, layered with notes of crushed violets, sweet spices, anise, and hints of tobacco and graphite. With air, more complexity emerges: subtle balsamic tones, warm stones after rain, and a delicate suggestion of forest floor and cedar. On the palate, this Gattinara is precise and vertical, with a taut backbone of acidity and finely etched, chalky tannins. Flavors of red currant, sour cherry and amarena intertwine with orange zest, licorice, dried herbs and a whisper of smoky minerality drawn from the volcanic porphyry soils. The mid-palate is both juicy and tightly coiled, leading into a long, resonant finish where red fruit, spice and saline minerality echo for minutes. The 2021 vintage delivers remarkable balance and structure, promising superb aging potential. While already captivating with proper aeration, this wine will reward patience: it should evolve gracefully for 15–25 years from the vintage, gaining truffle, leather and savory complexity as the tannins resolve and the fruit takes on a more ethereal, tertiary character.

Production
Vigna Molsino is a historic, amphitheatre-shaped vineyard in Gattinara, set on steep, south and southwest-facing slopes at altitude, where Nebbiolo thrives on ancient volcanic porphyry soils laced with sand, clay and abundant minerals. This unique terroir, cooler than the Langhe yet bathed in generous light, yields grapes with naturally high acidity, aromatic lift and a pronounced mineral imprint. The vines are carefully managed and harvested by hand, allowing for strict selection of perfectly ripe, healthy clusters in the vineyard. In the cellar, Nervi Conterno follows a traditional, low-intervention approach: fermentation typically takes place in temperature-controlled tanks with extended maceration to gently extract color, tannin and aroma; the wine is then aged in large, neutral oak botti for an extended period to preserve Nebbiolo’s purity while allowing slow, harmonious evolution. Bottling is done with minimal fining or filtration to capture the full character of vineyard and vintage.

Food & Serving
Nervi Conterno Gattinara Vigna Molsino 2021 is a natural partner for refined, savory dishes that can stand up to Nebbiolo’s structure and complexity. Think classic Piedmontese cuisine—braised veal shank, brasato al Barolo-style dishes, tajarin with white truffle, or beef cheek and osso buco—as well as game birds, roast lamb, duck, and mushroom-driven plates like porcini risotto or truffle-infused polenta. Mature hard cheeses, especially aged Parmigiano Reggiano or Pecorino, also make an excellent match. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Burgundy or Nebbiolo-specific stems to fully express the aromatic range. For optimal enjoyment in its youth, decant for 2–3 hours to soften the tannins and allow the bouquet to unfurl; as it ages, 1–2 hours of decanting will typically suffice.

Producer
Nervi is the oldest exclusively Nebbiolo-focused winery in Gattinara, founded in the early 20th century and long recognized as a benchmark for Alto Piemonte. In 2018, the estate entered a new chapter when it was acquired by Roberto Conterno of the famed Barolo producer Giacomo Conterno, and the winery was rebranded Nervi Conterno. This union brought together historic Gattinara vineyards such as Molsino and Valferana with one of Italy’s most exacting and respected winemaking minds. Under Conterno’s guidance, meticulous vineyard management and traditional long-aging practices have been refined and elevated, reaffirming Nervi Conterno’s status as a reference point for Nebbiolo outside Barolo and Barbaresco. Today, the estate is widely acclaimed for producing some of the most classical, ageworthy and terroir-transparent wines in northern Piedmont.
