Description
Nervi-Conterno Gattinara 2019 in magnum format is a remarkably refined expression of Alto Piemonte Nebbiolo, capturing the lighter, more ethereal side of this historic appellation. The 2019 vintage is praised for its luminosity, precision and silk-like tannins, with Antonio Galloni calling it “a total knockout” and noting its particularly delicate, understated profile. Bottled in 1.5 L, this magnum offers not only heightened aging potential but also a rare opportunity, as production was down by roughly 35% in this vintage.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Gattinara shows a radiant, transparent garnet hue with brick-red reflections at the rim, typical of high-quality Nebbiolo from a cooler, alpine-influenced terroir. The nose is lifted and pure, with aromas of wild strawberries, dried cherry, rose petals, violets and orange peel, layered with notes of crushed stone, sweet spices, subtly earthy undertones and a hint of dried herbs.
On the palate, the wine is elegant and finely etched rather than powerful, with a medium body framed by ultra-fine, silky tannins and vibrant acidity. Flavors of red cherry, cranberry and blood orange mingle with notes of licorice, anise, dried roses and a mineral, almost saline edge that speaks clearly of Gattinara’s volcanic soils. The finish is long, precise and mouthwatering, more about nuance than weight. In magnum, this 2019 has excellent aging potential: it can be enjoyed now with a proper decant, but will gain complexity and harmony over 12–20 years, and likely beyond, under good cellaring conditions.
Production
Nervi-Conterno’s Gattinara 2019 is sourced from estate vineyards in the Gattinara DOCG, in northern Piedmont, where Nebbiolo (locally known as Spanna) grows on steep, well-drained slopes of ancient volcanic and porphyry-rich soils. This unique terroir imparts a distinctive, iron-tinged minerality and finesse that sets Gattinara apart from its Langhe cousins. Grapes are typically hand-harvested to ensure careful selection of perfectly ripe, healthy clusters, often picked a bit later to achieve phenolic ripeness while preserving vibrant acidity. In the cellar, the wine is traditionally vinified with gentle extraction to emphasize perfume and delicacy, followed by an extended maturation in large Slavonian or Austrian oak casks. This approach respects the character of Nebbiolo and the terroir, allowing the wine to develop its refined aromatics, fine-grained structure and impressive longevity.
Food & Serving
This Gattinara is a natural partner for refined, savory dishes that complement its aromatic complexity rather than overpower it. Think classic Piemontese cuisine such as tajarin with white truffle, mushroom risotto, braised veal or beef (brasato al Nebbiolo), roasted game birds, duck, or lamb with herbs. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or mature pecorino, and delicate yet flavorful dishes featuring porcini or other wild mushrooms. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to showcase its aromatic lift and textural finesse. Given its youth and structure, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended, especially in the near term, to allow the wine to unfurl its floral, spicy and mineral nuances; in a few years, a shorter decant of around 45–60 minutes will typically suffice.
Producer
Founded in 1906, Nervi is the oldest estate in the Gattinara appellation and has long been considered one of its benchmark producers. In 2018, the winery entered a new chapter when Roberto Conterno of the famed Barolo house Giacomo Conterno took the helm, and the estate was renamed Nervi-Conterno. His arrival brought renewed focus, investment and obsessive attention to detail in vineyard management and cellar work, further elevating the already distinguished reputation of the domaine. Today, Nervi-Conterno stands as a reference point not only for Gattinara but for Alto Piemonte as a whole, producing Nebbiolo wines that are celebrated for their purity, precision and age-worthiness, and helping to confirm the region’s status as one of Italy’s most exciting fine-wine territories.
