Description

Mouton Rothschild 2018 in magnum format (1.5 L) is a powerful yet impeccably polished Pauillac, showcasing the grandeur of Cabernet Sauvignon from one of Bordeaux’s most illustrious estates. The 2018 vintage combines concentration and elegance, with ripe, structured tannins and remarkable freshness for such an intense year. Presented in magnum, it offers an even slower, more graceful evolution in bottle—ideal for collectors and for memorable occasions.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Mouton Rothschild is a deep, opaque garnet-purple, hinting at its youth and density. The nose is immediately expressive, leaping from the glass with bright, vivid aromas of crushed blackcurrants, juicy blackberries and redcurrant jelly, slowly unfurling layers of candied violets, stewed plums, licorice, black tea and a subtle note of dusty red earth. On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied yet wonderfully precise, built like a brick house with super-fine, super-ripe, grainy tannins that frame its muscular black fruit core. There is vibrant freshness running through the wine, balancing the concentration and driving a long, savory finish with lingering mineral nuances. Accessible already thanks to the ripeness and polish of the tannins, it will be hard to resist in its first 5–7 years, when more hidden details begin to emerge. In magnum, and under good cellaring conditions, it should continue to develop beautifully over 25+ years and has the potential to drink well for 40 years or more.

Production
The 2018 Mouton Rothschild is a classic Left Bank blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc, with a tiny dash of Petit Verdot that falls below the declared percentage. The estate’s vineyards sit on the great gravel mounds of Pauillac, with deep, well-draining gravel over limestone and clay, a terroir that naturally favors Cabernet Sauvignon and gives wines of power, precision and longevity. Grapes are harvested by hand, plot by plot, to ensure optimal ripeness and strict selection in the vineyard and at the sorting table. Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled vats, parcel by parcel, allowing fine-tuned extraction, followed by élevage in a high proportion of new French oak barrels, where the wine gains additional structure, complexity and aromatic finesse before bottling.

Food & Serving
This 2018 Mouton Rothschild is an outstanding partner for refined, richly flavored dishes: think roast lamb with rosemary and garlic, ribeye or côte de boeuf, venison or other game, and classic French preparations such as tournedos Rossini or duck with dark berry jus. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses like Comté, matured Gouda or aged Cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and balance. In its youth, decanting for 2–3 hours will help the wine open and soften the tannins; as it matures, a gentle 1-hour decant is usually sufficient to remove any sediment and allow the bouquet to blossom.

Producer
Château Mouton Rothschild is one of Bordeaux’s most iconic estates, located in Pauillac on the Left Bank of the Gironde. Elevated to First Growth (Premier Cru Classé) status in 1973, after decades of tireless advocacy by Baron Philippe de Rothschild, it is the only château ever to be promoted within the 1855 Classification—an event of historic importance in Bordeaux. The estate is famed not only for producing some of the world’s greatest Cabernet Sauvignon–based wines, but also for its artist-designed labels, commissioned from renowned painters and sculptors each vintage. Today, Mouton Rothschild stands as a benchmark for powerful yet refined Pauillac, consistently earning top critical acclaim and serving as a reference point for collectors and wine lovers across the globe.
