Description

Mouton Rothschild 2006 in magnum format is a commanding expression of Pauillac and one of the benchmark wines of the Médoc in this classic, structured vintage. Bottled in 1.5 L, it offers both grandeur at the table and a longer, more graceful evolution in the cellar. This is the wine that truly cemented winemaker Philippe Dhalluin’s reputation at Mouton, proving that he could craft a wine of great finesse and precision even in a year that followed the monumental 2005.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2006 Mouton Rothschild is deep garnet with a still-youthful, opaque core that hints at its concentration and longevity, particularly in magnum. The nose is finely etched and pure, opening with blackcurrant and blackberry, graphite, cedar and cigar box, before revealing subtler notes of cold slate, pencil shavings, licorice and a touch of violets and dark chocolate. On the palate, this is a poised, harmonious Pauillac, with a backbone of fresh, well-judged acidity and beautifully finessed, fine-grained tannins. The black fruit is layered and detailed—cassis, ripe plum and black cherry—wrapped in savory nuances of tobacco leaf, incense and mineral-driven notes that echo the graphite and cool stone aromas. The finish is long, focused and intricately detailed, suggesting many years of positive evolution ahead. In magnum, the 2006 is still on an upward curve: already highly enjoyable with proper aeration, but with the structure and balance to age gracefully for another 15–25 years or more, depending on storage.

Production
The 2006 Mouton Rothschild hails from the famed Pauillac terraces on the Left Bank of Bordeaux, where deep gravel soils over limestone and clay provide exceptional drainage and force the Cabernet Sauvignon vines to dig deep, concentrating flavor and imparting the estate’s signature graphite and cassis profile. Harvest is carried out by hand, parcel by parcel, to ensure optimal ripeness and meticulous selection of the healthiest berries. In the cellar, vinification is conducted in temperature-controlled vats, with precise extraction to capture both power and finesse, followed by élevage in a high proportion of new French oak barrels. This careful, traditional First Growth regimen allows the wine’s structure, aromatic complexity and terroir character to develop into a seamlessly integrated whole, especially in the slower-maturing magnum format.

Food & Serving
This magnum of 2006 Mouton Rothschild is superb alongside classic, richly flavored dishes such as roast lamb with rosemary, dry-aged ribeye or côte de boeuf, venison or other game birds, and dishes featuring truffles or wild mushrooms. It also pairs beautifully with mature hard cheeses like aged Comté or Parmesan. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to showcase its aromatic complexity and freshness. Given its youthfulness in magnum, decant for 1.5–3 hours before serving to allow the wine to fully open and reveal its layered bouquet and refined texture.

Producer
Château Mouton Rothschild is one of Bordeaux’s most illustrious First Growth estates, located in Pauillac on the Left Bank and owned by the Rothschild family since 1853. Once famously ranked as a Second Growth, it achieved historic promotion to First Growth status in 1973—an unprecedented event in Bordeaux’s classification and a testament to its relentless pursuit of quality. Renowned for its powerful, opulent Cabernet-based wines, Mouton is equally celebrated for commissioning original label artwork from world-famous artists each vintage. Under the modern-era stewardship of the Rothschild family and the winemaking direction of Philippe Dhalluin, the estate has solidified its position as one of the leading references of the Médoc, consistently producing wines that combine depth, polish and unmistakable Pauillac character.
