Description
Mouton Rothschild 2006 is a classic Pauillac from one of Bordeaux’s most illustrious First Growth châteaux, offering the depth, finesse and longevity that have made this estate legendary. Crafted in a more challenging vintage than 2005, it famously showcased winemaker Philippe Dhalluin’s skill, emerging as one of the standout wines of the year. Today, it stands as a beautifully poised claret, sitting in a superb drinking window yet with years of life still ahead.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Mouton Rothschild 2006 shows a deep garnet core with just a hint of brick at the rim, reflecting its evolution while still retaining impressive concentration. The nose is precise and delineated, with layers of blackcurrant and blackberry interwoven with graphite, cedar, cold slate, and subtle roasted coffee and cigar box notes.
On the palate, the wine is harmonious and finely structured, with ripe yet firm, finessed tannins and a vibrant, well-judged acidity that keeps everything fresh and focused. Dark berry fruits, cassis and plum unfold alongside notes of pencil lead, tobacco, licorice and a mineral, almost cool-stone character that adds sophistication and length. The finish is long, detailed and elegant, suggesting that while this vintage is already giving enormous pleasure, it still has significant aging potential—easily another 10–15 years in a good cellar, and likely more.
Production
Mouton Rothschild 2006 comes from the château’s prime holdings in Pauillac, on the Left Bank of Bordeaux, where deep gravel soils over limestone and clay provide perfect conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon to ripen slowly and evenly. The grapes—predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot—are carefully hand-harvested parcel by parcel, allowing for strict selection. Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled vats, with each plot fermented separately to preserve its character, before blending. The wine is then aged in 100% new French oak barriques, where it undergoes maturation that builds texture, complexity and the signature Mouton refinement.
Food & Serving
This 2006 Mouton Rothschild is a natural partner for classic dishes such as roast lamb with rosemary, entrecôte steak, venison, or slow-braised beef, as well as richer poultry like duck and game birds. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses such as Comté or mature cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended for current drinking, both to open up the bouquet and to soften the tannins, though older bottles should be handled gently and decanted just before serving.

Château Mouton Rothschild is one of Bordeaux’s five First Growths and a global icon of fine wine, located in Pauillac on the Left Bank of the Gironde. Elevated to First Growth status in 1973 after decades of tireless advocacy by Baron Philippe de Rothschild, it is renowned not only for the opulence and longevity of its wines but also for its famous artist-designed labels, created each year by leading contemporary artists.
