Moser’s 2020 Trento Blanc de Blancs Brut Nature is a traditional-method sparkling wine made entirely from Chardonnay, with no dosage to soften its crisp, mineral character. Aged for 60 months on the lees and produced in a limited run of 6,000 bottles, it reflects the mountain vineyards of Trentino; it has also received three red glasses from Gambero Rosso.
Tasting Notes
Bright straw-yellow in the glass, with a fine, persistent stream of bubbles. The extended lees ageing brings aromas of toasted bread and butter, joined by fresh almond and citrus against a distinct mineral backdrop.
The palate is dry, saline and creamy, balanced by lively freshness. Citrus and mineral notes lead into a satisfying almond-like finish. The 60 months on the lees have already given the wine considerable aromatic and textural complexity; no further cellaring guidance is provided.
Production
The Chardonnay comes from Maso Warth, a natural amphitheatre above Trento at around 350 metres, where limestone soils contribute tension, and from pergola-trained vineyards in the Cembra Valley at 500–650 metres, with clay- and porphyry-rich soils associated with the wine’s saline character. The vines are 15–30 years old. Grapes are picked by hand and gently pressed to obtain the free-run juice, then fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel. The wine undergoes its second fermentation by the traditional method and matures on selected lees for 60 months.
Food & Serving
Serve well chilled, around 8–10°C, with oysters, shellfish, grilled fish or delicate seafood dishes. Its freshness and saline edge also suit fried appetisers and aged Alpine cheeses. Pour straight from the bottle; decanting is generally unnecessary for a sparkling wine of this style.
Producer
Founded in 1979 by Diego and Francesco Moser, the winery is rooted in the rural wine-growing traditions of the Cembra Valley. Moser’s Trento sparkling wines draw on mountain-grown Chardonnay from the valley and the Maso Warth area, with an emphasis on expressing local terroir. This bottling is produced in a limited quantity of 6,000 bottles and has been awarded three red glasses by Gambero Rosso.
