Description
Moric Hausmarke Rot Solera S22 is an expressive Austrian red that blends multiple vintages and grape varieties into one seamless, characterful wine. Crafted by Roland Velich in Burgenland, it takes inspiration from the traditional Solera system to create a cuvée that is both vibrant and deeply complex. This is a house wine in name only: it’s a serious, quietly sophisticated red meant to be enjoyed both at the table and in thoughtful tasting.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Hausmarke Rot Solera S22 shows a bright, translucent ruby to garnet hue, with a lively rim that hints at both youth and the presence of older reserve components. The nose is immediately inviting, offering red cherry, wild raspberry and cranberry, layered with notes of dried rose petals, forest floor, subtle spice, and a whisper of tobacco and cocoa from the older vintages in the blend.
On the palate, the wine is supple and medium‑bodied, with a beautiful interplay of freshness and maturity. Lemberger/Blaufränkisch contributes lifted acidity and fine, salty-mineral tension; Rotburger brings juicy red fruit; Merlot adds a touch of plummy roundness; while Spätburgunder/Pinot Noir supplies elegance and silky texture. Tannins are fine-grained and gently structured, giving just enough grip without ever feeling heavy. Flavors of sour cherry, red currant, wild herbs, and subtle earthy notes carry through to a long, savoury finish. Thanks to its Solera-style build, it drinks beautifully on release yet has the stuffing to evolve gracefully for another 5–8 years, gaining further tertiary nuances and softness.
Production
The grapes for Moric Hausmarke Rot Solera S22 come from selected Burgenland vineyards, where the Pannonian climate meets cool night-time breezes and diverse soils of loam, gravel and limestone. This mix of warm days and cooler nights allows for slow, balanced ripening and intense but finely etched fruit. The Lemberger/Blaufränkisch, Merlot, Rotburger and Spätburgunder/Pinot Noir are harvested by hand, with meticulous sorting in the vineyard and at the winery. Roland Velich adapts the traditional Solera method: the base of the cuvée is the 2021 vintage, complemented by a portion of 2022 and ever smaller fractions of previous years reaching back to 2012. A portion of the grapes is fermented with stems to add structure and aromatic complexity, and vinification is carried out with a gentle, low‑intervention philosophy—spontaneous fermentations, moderate extraction, and maturation in neutral wooden vessels to preserve purity and finesse rather than oak imprint.
Food & Serving
This versatile red is a natural fit for Central European and Mediterranean fare alike. Pair it with roast chicken, duck breast, grilled pork chops, charcuterie, mushroom dishes, or rustic pasta with tomato and herbs; it also works beautifully with lighter game, veal schnitzel, or mature semi-hard cheeses. Serve at 14–16 °C to highlight its freshness and aromatic detail. A short decant of 20–30 minutes helps the wine open up its floral, spicy and earthy layers, especially if enjoyed in its youth, though it can also be poured directly from the bottle for a more linear, energetic expression.
Producer
Roland Velich, the force behind Moric, is widely regarded as one of the key figures in the renaissance of Blaufränkisch and the modern identity of Burgenland. Founded with the goal of expressing the region’s terroir with Burgundian sensitivity and Austrian authenticity, Moric focuses on meticulous vineyard work, low yields and minimal intervention in the cellar. Velich’s wines have helped reposition Burgenland on the world stage as a source of elegant, terroir-driven reds rather than merely robust, warm-climate wines. The Hausmarke line, and particularly this Solera red, showcases his ability to craft wines that are both approachable and intellectually engaging, bridging everyday drinking and fine-wine seriousness in a uniquely Moric style.
