Description
Moric Blaufränkisch 2023 is a quietly compelling red from Burgenland that shows just how elegant and nuanced this native Austrian grape can be. Crafted by Roland Velich, one of the leading voices for Blaufränkisch, it focuses on purity, juiciness and finesse rather than power and oak. This is a wine that champions traditional, terroir-driven Burgenland character in a thoroughly modern, drinkable style.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Moric Blaufränkisch typically shows a deep violet to vibrant ruby hue, with a youthful, luminous edge that hints at its freshness. The nose is dark-fruited and inviting: think ripe blackberry, black cherry and amarena, layered with subtle notes of licorice, roasted coffee bean and a faint, earthy smokiness.
On the palate, the wine is silky and full without feeling heavy, with a core of juicy dark fruit framed by lively, mouthwatering acidity. Fine-grained tannins give structure while remaining supple, allowing the wine’s finesse and clarity of fruit to shine. The finish is long, spicy and slightly savory, with traces of graphite and a gentle herbal lift. Enjoyable in its youth for its vibrancy and charm, it also has the potential to develop more complexity over the next 5–8 years under good cellaring conditions.
Production
The grapes for Moric Blaufränkisch are sourced from selected sites in Burgenland, where the combination of limestone, schist and loamy soils, along with the Pannonian climate, lends both ripeness and a finely etched structure to the fruit. Yields are kept moderate, and harvesting is typically done by hand to ensure careful selection of perfectly ripe, healthy bunches. In the cellar, maceration is kept relatively short to avoid over-extraction and preserve elegance, and fermentation takes place with a gentle touch. The wine is then aged in large, neutral wooden casks rather than new barrique, allowing it to develop texture and complexity without being dominated by oak, and to express the grape and region with clarity.
Food & Serving
This Blaufränkisch is a versatile food partner, working beautifully with dishes such as roast duck, herb-crusted lamb, veal chops, grilled sausages, mushroom risotto, or hearty vegetable dishes featuring lentils or root vegetables. It also pairs well with charcuterie and semi-hard cheeses like Comté or aged Alpine styles. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) to emphasize its freshness and aromatic detail. A short decant of 30–45 minutes can help the wine open up its darker fruit and savory nuances, especially in its first few years after release.
Producer
Roland Velich of Moric has become one of Austria’s benchmark producers for Blaufränkisch, dedicating his work to showing that this grape can stand alongside some of the world’s great terroir wines. Based in Burgenland, he focuses on old vines, traditional methods and sensitive winemaking to highlight the character of each site rather than the hand of the winemaker. Since founding Moric, Velich has been instrumental in redefining the image of Burgenland reds, earning international acclaim for their finesse, ageworthiness and Burgundian sense of elegance. His wines are now considered reference points for the region and a touchstone for serious Blaufränkisch worldwide.
