Description
Château Montrose 2000 is a striking Saint-Estèphe from one of Bordeaux’s most respected estates, offering the structure, depth and longevity that have made the château a benchmark in the Médoc. Classified as a 2ème Grand Cru Classé in 1855, it combines the power of the appellation with the finesse and precision that collectors look for in a mature Left Bank Bordeaux.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine typically shows a deep garnet core with evolving brick-red tones at the rim, reflecting its age. The nose is layered and classical, with aromas of blackcurrant, cedar, tobacco, graphite, dried flowers and earthy spice, gradually opening to notes of leather, truffle and cigar box.
On the palate, it is full-bodied and firmly structured, with Saint-Estèphe’s signature backbone of tannin and fresh acidity supporting concentrated dark fruit and savory complexity. The 2000 vintage is known for its balance and aging ability, and Montrose from this year can continue to evolve beautifully, though it is already in an excellent drinking window for those who enjoy mature Bordeaux.
Production
Château Montrose is situated on the gravelly and clay-rich soils of Saint-Estèphe, where the cool influence of the Gironde estuary helps preserve freshness and structure in the wines. The estate is traditionally planted to the classic Left Bank Bordeaux varieties, with vinification typically focused on parcel selection, careful extraction and aging in oak barrels to build complexity and depth while preserving the wine’s mineral character.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with roasted lamb, beef tenderloin, duck breast, game, and rich mushroom dishes. It is best served at around 16–18°C, and decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended if the bottle is still showing youthful structure or if sediment is present.
Producer
Château Montrose has long been regarded as one of the great names of Saint-Estèphe and Bordeaux more broadly. Ranked as a 2ème Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 Classification, the estate is known for producing powerful, ageworthy wines with exceptional consistency, and it has earned an enduring reputation among collectors for its balance of strength, elegance and longevity.
