Montrose 2020 in magnum format is already being hailed as one of the château’s greatest wines of recent decades, rivaling the legendary 2016 and surpassing the superb 2019. This is a monumental Saint-Estèphe, still very much in its youth, offering extraordinary depth, purity and precision. Bottled in 1.5L, it’s built for long-term aging and truly special occasions.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, 2020 Montrose shows a deep, opaque ruby-purple hue, signaling both concentration and youth. The nose unfurls slowly but powerfully with layers of violets, blackcurrants, blackberries and dark cherries, supported by notes of licorice, clay-rich earth, black truffle and discreet, finely etched spice. On the palate, this is full-bodied and impeccably structured, with a refined yet muscular frame typical of great Montrose vintages. The fruit is pure and vibrant, with dark berry intensity wrapped around a core of graphite, savory earth and subtle tobacco. Beautifully powdery tannins give it a velvety grip, while the acidity keeps everything lifted and energetic. The finish is long, resonant and persistent, promising decades of evolution. In magnum, you can comfortably expect this wine to age and improve for 25–40 years, gaining complexity and nuance over time.

Production
Château Montrose sits on one of the Médoc’s great terroirs in Saint-Estèphe, a gravelly hillside overlooking the Gironde estuary with deep layers of gravel, clay and sand that are ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2020 blend is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Merlot and small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, all sourced from meticulously tended, low-yielding vines. Harvesting is done parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness, followed by strict sorting to ensure only pristine berries make it into the grand vin. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats, with careful extraction to preserve finesse and freshness rather than brute power. The wine is then aged in French oak barriques, a high proportion of them new, allowing the structure to integrate and the complex aromatics to develop without overshadowing the purity of the fruit.

Food & Serving
This powerful yet finely detailed Bordeaux calls for equally refined, flavorful dishes: think dry-aged ribeye, roast lamb with rosemary and garlic, venison with truffle jus, or slow-braised beef cheeks. It also shines with classic French preparations like duck breast, tournedos Rossini or earthy dishes featuring wild mushrooms and black truffle. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal balance. In its youth, decant for 2–3 hours to allow the aromatics to open and the tannins to soften; as it matures, a shorter decant of about an hour will be sufficient to let this magnificent wine fully express itself.
