Description
Montrose 2020 is a towering, collectible Bordeaux that many critics rank alongside – or even above – the legendary 2016, marking it as one of the château’s greatest wines in decades. This is Saint-Estèphe at its most refined: powerful yet poised, with remarkable purity, depth and energy. A classic Left Bank blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, it offers both immediate fascination and extraordinary long-term potential for the cellar.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Montrose 2020 is a dense, opaque garnet with a vivid purple rim that hints at its youth and concentration. The nose is wonderfully complex and expressive, opening with violets and blackberries, followed by layers of blackcurrant, licorice, dark cherry and plum, supported by nuances of clay-rich earth, black truffle and subtle, fine spice from the oak.
On the palate, this is full-bodied and deeply structured, yet remarkably precise and harmonious. Ripe black and blue fruits are framed by beautifully powdery, refined tannins, giving the wine an almost velvety texture despite its power. Notes of graphite, tobacco, cocoa and savory earth weave through the fruit, leading into a very long, resonant finish that lingers with freshness and mineral drive. With its impeccable balance and moderate 13.7% alcohol, this 2020 is built for long aging; it will reward patience over 15–30+ years, gradually unveiling even greater complexity and sophistication.
Production
Château Montrose lies on one of Saint-Estèphe’s most privileged terroirs, a deep gravel hilltop overlooking the Gironde estuary, underpinned by clay that naturally regulates water and enhances structure and freshness in the wines. The vineyard is planted predominantly to Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot playing supporting roles. Grapes are carefully hand-harvested plot by plot at optimal ripeness, ensuring strict selection in the vineyard and at the sorting table. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats, allowing parcel-by-parcel vinification to respect the nuances of each block. The grand vin is then matured in French oak barriques (a significant proportion new) to integrate tannins, add subtle spice notes and frame the natural intensity of the fruit without overshadowing the purity and character of the terroir.
Food & Serving
Montrose 2020 is a natural partner for refined, richly flavored dishes such as roast or grilled lamb, dry-aged ribeye, beef Wellington, duck breast, venison or other game, as well as earthy plates featuring wild mushrooms, truffle, or slow-braised short ribs. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses like Comté or mature cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Bordeaux glasses. In its youth, decant for 2–3 hours to allow the wine to unfurl its layers of aroma and soften the tannins; as it matures, a shorter decant of about an hour will be sufficient to remove sediment and awaken its more subtle nuances.
Producer
Château Montrose is one of the most revered estates in Bordeaux, classified as a Second Growth (Deuxième Cru Classé) in the historic 1855 Classification. Located in Saint-Estèphe on the Left Bank of the Gironde, Montrose has long been recognized for producing some of the Médoc’s most powerful, age-worthy wines, often rivaling First Growths in structure and longevity. Over recent decades, significant investments in the vineyard and cellar, along with a meticulous, terroir-driven approach, have elevated quality to new heights. Vintages such as 1990, 2009, 2010, 2016 and now 2020 have cemented Montrose’s reputation as a benchmark estate, consistently delivering wines of depth, precision and remarkable aging potential.
