Description
Montrose 2008 in magnum format is a powerful, classically structured Saint-Estèphe that showcases the pedigree of one of Bordeaux’s greatest terroirs in a superbly age-worthy vintage. Bottled in 1.5L, this wine evolves more slowly and gracefully, offering extra refinement and complexity over time. Its combination of dense Cabernet fruit, minerality, and poised structure has made it one of the standout wines of the 2008 Bordeaux vintage.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2008 Montrose shows a deep, opaque garnet color with only the slightest rim development, reflecting both its concentration and impressive aging potential. The nose is complex and refined, opening with blackcurrant and blackberry, followed by graphite, crushed stone, and subtle forest notes of fern and undergrowth. With air, hints of cedar, tobacco, and dark plum emerge, all wrapped in a cool, classic Médoc character.
On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied with a firm, gripping tannic structure that is both fine and persistent. Dark fruit – blackcurrant, blackberry, and black cherry – is layered with mineral notes, hints of cocoa, and savory spice. A lively, precise line of acidity keeps everything in balance and drives a long, powerful, and very mineral finish. In magnum, this 2008 is built for the long haul; while already enjoyable with proper aeration, it will continue to develop added nuance and harmony over the next 10–20 years and beyond.
Production
Château Montrose sits on a prime gravelly hilltop overlooking the Gironde in Saint-Estèphe, an exceptional terroir of deep gravel and clay that naturally favors Cabernet Sauvignon and yields wines of great density and freshness. The 2008 blend is 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot, harvested parcel by parcel between 29 September and 15 October to ensure optimal ripeness and selection. Grapes are handpicked and rigorously sorted before fermentation in temperature-controlled vats, with careful extraction to preserve structure and purity. The wine is then aged in French oak barriques (a significant proportion new), allowing the powerful fruit and pronounced mineral character to integrate slowly while maintaining Montrose’s hallmark precision and tension.
Food & Serving
This vintage of Montrose is a natural partner for rich, savory dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, ribeye or côte de boeuf, game birds, and slow-braised beef or veal. It also pairs beautifully with earthy, truffle-infused dishes, wild mushrooms, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or mature cheddar. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). Given its age and structure, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to allow the bouquet to fully open and the tannins to soften, especially from magnum.
Producer
Château Montrose is one of the benchmark estates of Saint-Estèphe and a celebrated Deuxième Cru Classé in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. Long admired for producing some of the most powerful and long-lived wines in the Médoc, Montrose has consistently emphasized meticulous vineyard work and precision winemaking to express its unique gravel-and-clay terroir. Under modern stewardship, quality has been further elevated, and the château is frequently cited alongside the very top names of Bordeaux. Vintages like 2008 underscore Montrose’s reputation for excelling in classical, cooler years, crafting wines of great structure, depth, and aging potential.
