Description

Bottled in an rare 6L Imperial, Montrose 2008 is a powerful, classically styled Bordeaux from one of Saint-Estèphe’s most revered estates. This Second Growth delivers the structure, depth and longevity that collectors seek, wrapped in the understated elegance that defines great vintages of Montrose. The 2008 is widely regarded as one of the standout wines of the year, combining dark, mineral-driven fruit with impressive finesse and aging potential.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Montrose 2008 shows a deep, opaque ruby color with a subtle garnet rim, reflecting its slow, graceful evolution. The bouquet is intense yet composed, opening with blackcurrant, blackberry and black cherry layered over graphite, crushed stone, and cedar. With air, notes of fern, tobacco leaf, pencil shavings, and a touch of spice emerge, underlining the wine’s strong mineral character and classic Saint-Estèphe profile. On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied with firm, gripping tannins and a vibrant line of acidity that drives the wine through a long, powerful finish. Flavors of dark berries, plum and cassis are interwoven with savory notes of earth, cigar box, and wet stone, giving both depth and precision. The structure is bold yet finely knit, showcasing impressive tension and energy. In a 6L Imperial format, the 2008 Montrose has exceptional aging potential; it will continue to evolve and gain complexity over the next 15–25 years or more, rewarding long-term cellaring.

Production
Château Montrose is situated on one of the great terroirs of Saint-Estèphe, overlooking the Gironde estuary on deep gravel soils over clay and sand that naturally favor Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2008 is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot, harvested parcel by parcel between 29 September and 15 October. Yields are carefully managed and the grapes are hand-picked and rigorously sorted to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy fruit enters the cuvée. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats, with careful extraction to build structure without harshness. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels (a significant portion new) for around 18–20 months, allowing the tannins to refine and the complex bouquet to develop while preserving the estate’s hallmark minerality and precision.

Food & Serving
Montrose 2008 is an ideal partner for classic, richly flavored dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, dry-aged ribeye, venison, duck breast, or slow-braised beef. It also pairs beautifully with hearty dishes featuring mushrooms, truffles, or root vegetables, as well as aged hard cheeses like Comté or matured cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight both its fruit and its mineral backbone. Given its youthfulness in this large 6L format and its structured profile, decanting for 2–4 hours is recommended to allow the bouquet to open and the tannins to soften; for fully mature bottles, a shorter decant primarily to remove sediment will suffice.

Producer
Château Montrose, classified as a Second Growth (Deuxième Grand Cru Classé) in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, is one of the benchmark estates of Saint-Estèphe and the Médoc. Established in the 19th century, Montrose quickly gained a reputation for producing some of the most profound and long-lived wines of the Left Bank, often rivaling First Growths in depth and longevity. Its gravelly, well-drained slopes by the Gironde estuary and rigorous vineyard and cellar practices have cemented its status as a reference for powerful yet refined Cabernet-based Bordeaux. Consistently acclaimed by critics, Montrose’s top vintages, including the 2008, are counted among the greatest wines of their respective years and are highly sought after by collectors worldwide.
