Description

Montrose 2003 is widely regarded as one of the standout wines from Bordeaux’s hot 2003 vintage, and notably one of the slowest to evolve. This powerful Saint-Estèphe red combines richness and structure in a way that has allowed it to age gracefully while already offering immense drinking pleasure. For collectors and classic Bordeaux lovers alike, it’s a benchmark wine from an extraordinary and challenging year.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Montrose 2003 shows a deep, opaque garnet core with just a touch of bricking at the rim, reflecting its two decades of maturity while still appearing remarkably youthful. The nose is intense and complex, with vivid notes of ripe blackberry and blackcurrant interwoven with black truffle, damp clay earth, graphite, pencil shavings and a subtle hint of cedar and tobacco. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, rich and layered, opening with a broad, generous attack of sweet yet vibrant dark fruit. The mid-palate is concentrated and structured, with supple but present tannins that feel fine and powdery, framing flavors of cassis, plum, licorice, earthy spice and savory truffle. The balance between ripe fruit, freshness and structure is impressive for such a warm vintage. While the 2003 is drinking beautifully now and shows no sign of imminent decline, its depth and tannic backbone suggest it can continue to evolve gracefully for several more years, especially when well cellared.

Production
Château Montrose sits on some of the finest gravelly hilltops of Saint-Estèphe in Bordeaux, overlooking the Gironde estuary, whose cooling influence helps moderate temperatures—even in hot years like 2003. The vineyard is planted predominantly to Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, all rooted in deep gravel mixed with clay, which provides both excellent drainage and water retention in drought-like conditions. The grapes are harvested by hand, parcel by parcel, to ensure only perfectly ripe clusters are selected, a crucial factor in managing the extremes of the 2003 vintage. In the cellar, the wine is vinified in temperature-controlled vats, with careful extraction to obtain ripe tannins without harshness, then aged in French oak barriques (a significant proportion new) to build structure, complexity and longevity while preserving the estate’s signature classical profile.

Food & Serving
Montrose 2003 is a superb match for rich, savory dishes that can stand up to its depth and structure. Think ribeye or côte de boeuf, slow-braised lamb shank, duck confit, venison or other game, as well as classic French dishes like boeuf bourguignon or a truffle-rich roast poultry. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses such as Comté, Tomme de Savoie or mature cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to allow the wine to fully open, soften the tannins and release its layered aromatics.

Producer
Château Montrose is one of the great names of Bordeaux, classified as a Second Growth (Deuxième Cru Classé) in the 1855 Classification and long regarded as the reference estate of Saint-Estèphe. The property’s reputation was built on its ability to craft deeply structured, long-lived Cabernet Sauvignon–based wines that marry power with classic Médoc elegance. Over the past decades, significant investment in both vineyard and cellar has elevated quality even further, and Montrose is now frequently mentioned alongside the very top estates of the Left Bank. The 2003 vintage is often cited as one of the château’s landmark wines of the early 21st century, confirming Montrose’s status as a true vinfokæmper—a champion wine—capable of excelling even in extreme conditions.
