Description

Montirius Confidentiel Gigondas Bio 2015 is a powerful, biodynamic red from the sun‑drenched southern Rhône, crafted for those who appreciate depth, nuance and time in the glass. Made primarily from old-vine Grenache Noir and Mourvèdre, this cuvée is deliberately produced in small quantities for a more discerning circle of wine lovers. Its unique character lies in the contrast between Mediterranean richness and a remarkably refined, almost contemplative evolution as it slowly opens over hours.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2015 Confidentiel shows a deep, opaque ruby-purple hue with a dense core and a slightly garnet-tinged rim hinting at its developing complexity. The nose is opulent and layered, offering an almost heady bouquet of rumtopf (spirited preserved fruits), ripe blueberry, plum compote and dried fig, lifted by notes of lavender, thyme, star anise and a touch of wild garrigue. Earthy nuances of damp forest floor after rain and a faint smokiness add intrigue and depth. On the palate, this is a true Gigondas ‘giant’: full-bodied, concentrated and mouthfilling, yet remarkably poised. Dark berry and plum fruit intertwine with hints of date wrapped in smoky bacon, sweet spice, licorice and savory herbal tones. The tannins are firm but ripe and velvety, providing structure without harshness, while a fresh, mineral backbone keeps the wine from feeling heavy despite its power. The finish is very long, evolving from ripe fruit to savory, spicy and earthy notes over time. This 2015 has excellent aging potential; well-stored bottles should continue to develop greater complexity and tertiary aromas over the next 10–15 years, and likely longer.

Production
Montirius Confidentiel comes from certified organic and biodynamically farmed vineyards in Gigondas, on the southern slopes of the Dentelles de Montmirail in the southern Rhône. Here, a mosaic of limestone, clay and sandy soils, combined with ample sun and cooling mistral winds, gives grapes of great concentration and natural freshness. The Grenache Noir and Mourvèdre are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, with rigorous sorting to ensure only the healthiest, most expressive fruit makes it into the cuvée. In the cellar, the philosophy is minimal intervention: native yeast fermentations, gentle extraction and maturation in concrete rather than barrique, preserving purity of fruit and terroir expression without overlaying new oak flavors. This approach allows the wine’s Mediterranean power to shine, while maintaining balance, finesse and a precise reflection of its Gigondas origins.

Food & Serving
This is a superb partner for richly flavored, hearty cuisine: think slow-braised lamb shanks with herbs, daube de boeuf Provençale, game dishes, duck breast with a berry reduction, or grilled ribeye with roasted root vegetables. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses and Mediterranean vegetable dishes featuring eggplant, olives and tomatoes. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) to showcase both its fruit and savory complexity. Decant generously: at least 1–2 hours for current drinking, longer if you want to follow its evolution in the glass over an evening. Mature bottles may require a gentler, shorter decant to separate sediment while preserving delicate tertiary aromas.

Producer
Montirius is a pioneering estate in the southern Rhône, renowned for its unwavering commitment to organic and biodynamic viticulture long before it became fashionable. Based in the heart of Vacqueyras and Gigondas, the family-run domaine has become a reference point for pure, terroir-driven wines that express the character of each parcel without cosmetic winemaking. Their work has helped elevate the reputation of the region’s crus by proving that Grenache- and Mourvèdre-based wines can achieve both power and elegance with minimal intervention. Over the years, Montirius has earned critical acclaim for its consistent quality, its early and rigorous adoption of biodynamics, and its role in showcasing Gigondas as a source of serious, ageworthy wines with real personality.
