Description
Montirius Confidentiel Gigondas Bio 2010 is a commanding, deeply expressive Southern Rhône red crafted for those who appreciate both sheer power and quiet nuance. Its name, “Confidentiel,” hints at a wine made for a select circle—one that reveals its full personality only to those willing to give it time and attention. Certified organic and made with minimal intervention, this cuvée channels the raw Mediterranean character of Gigondas into a refined, ageworthy expression of Grenache and Mourvèdre.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2010 Confidentiel shows a deep, dark garnet core with brick-red reflections at the rim, hinting at its evolution in bottle. The nose is lavish and complex, initially bursting with aromas reminiscent of rumtopf and dark berry compote: macerated blueberries, black cherries, and plum jam. Layered beneath are notes of lavender and dried herbs from the garrigue, alongside thyme, anise, and a distinctive earthy tone—like forest floor after a summer storm.
On the palate, this is a powerful, full-bodied wine with a generous, velvety texture and impressive concentration. Ripe black fruits, spiced plum and blueberry are wrapped in savory nuances of licorice, wild herbs and subtle game. As it opens over hours, the wine becomes increasingly intricate, trading its initial exuberance for a more elegant, mineral-inflected profile and refined tannins. The structure and acidity of the 2010 vintage give it excellent aging potential; well-stored bottles can easily evolve for another decade, gaining further tertiary notes of leather, truffle and dried flowers.
Production
Montirius Confidentiel is sourced from certified organic vineyards in Gigondas, in the southern Rhône, where old-vine Grenache Noir and Mourvèdre grow on a mosaic of limestone, clay and sandy soils that lend both power and lift to the wine. The Mediterranean climate, moderated by the Mistral wind, ensures excellent ripeness while preserving freshness. Grapes are typically harvested by hand at optimal maturity, with strict sorting to retain only the healthiest, most concentrated fruit. In the cellar, Montirius employs a minimalist philosophy: native yeast fermentations, gentle extraction, and élevage in concrete rather than barrique, allowing the purity of fruit, terroir and vintage to shine without the overlay of new oak. The result is a wine that is both richly textured and remarkably transparent to its origin.
Food & Serving
This Gigondas calls for hearty, flavor-packed dishes: think slow-braised lamb shanks with rosemary, rustic beef daube, wild boar ragù, or grilled ribeye with herbes de Provence. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses, mushroom-based dishes, and roasted root vegetables with thyme and garlic. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to showcase its complexity without emphasizing alcohol. For maximum enjoyment, decant at least 1–2 hours before serving—longer if the bottle is opened at peak maturity—to allow the wine to unfold its full spectrum of aromas and textural nuance.
Producer
Montirius is a family-run estate in the southern Rhône, widely respected as a pioneer of biodynamic and organic viticulture in Gigondas and Vacqueyras. Over decades, the estate has built a reputation for wines that combine depth and authenticity with remarkable finesse, always putting terroir expression ahead of modern winemaking tricks. Their steadfast commitment to working without chemical inputs in the vineyard and with minimal intervention in the cellar has made Montirius a reference point for purist, site-driven Rhône wines. Confidentiel stands among the estate’s flagship cuvées, regularly praised by critics and enthusiasts for its capacity to age and its ability to encapsulate the wild, sun-drenched character of Gigondas in a polished, contemplative style.
