Description

Montevertine Le Pergole Torte 2022 in magnum format is one of Tuscany’s most sought‑after pure Sangiovese expressions, and in this vintage it is every bit as compelling as its illustrious predecessors. Deep, layered and immediately captivating, it marries intensity and finesse in a way that only the top vineyards of Radda in Chianti can deliver. Long regarded as a benchmark “Super‑Tuscan” Sangiovese, Le Pergole Torte has helped redefine what the grape – and the region – are capable of at the highest level.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Le Pergole Torte shows a vibrant, saturated ruby with youthful, almost electric highlights, especially striking in magnum. The nose opens slowly but assuredly, revealing dark cherry and black raspberry wrapped in notes of mocha, new leather, cedar, dried rose and a hint of blood orange peel. Subtle undertones of tobacco, sweet spices and warm terracotta emerge with air, giving the wine an intricate, layered aromatic profile. On the palate, the wine is both graceful and powerful, coating the mouth with dark red and black fruits, cocoa nib, fine espresso and polished oak spice. The tannins are refined yet firm, framing the fruit without ever feeling heavy, while a vibrant Tuscan acidity keeps everything precise and energetic. The finish builds and expands at the back of the palate, echoing with cherry, cedar and savoury herbs long after each sip. In magnum, the 2022 has excellent aging potential: it will start to show real complexity after 5–7 years and comfortably evolve for 15–25 years or more under proper cellaring.

Production
Le Pergole Torte is sourced from Montevertine’s highest, best‑exposed Sangiovese parcels around Radda in Chianti, an area known for its altitude, rocky galestro and alberese soils, and cooler microclimate. These conditions naturally limit yields and enhance aromatic lift and structural tension. The grapes are hand‑harvested in small crates and rigorously sorted before fermentation, reflecting Montevertine’s meticulous, quality‑first philosophy. Fermentation traditionally takes place in concrete tanks with indigenous yeasts, allowing a gentle, slow extraction that preserves the purity of Sangiovese. The 2022 spent around one year in French oak barriques from Damy, followed by a further year in larger casks, marrying nuance from fine oak with the classical savoury profile of long wood aging. Bottling in magnum further protects the wine and encourages a slower, more complex evolution.

Food & Serving
Le Pergole Torte 2022 is a superb match for refined Tuscan cuisine and dishes where depth of flavour meets understated richness: think bistecca alla fiorentina, roast lamb with rosemary and garlic, slow‑braised veal shanks, or game birds with porcini mushrooms. It also pairs beautifully with aged Pecorino, Parmigiano Reggiano, truffle‑infused dishes and earthy vegetable preparations like grilled aubergine or mushroom ragu. Serve at 16–18 °C; in magnum, the wine benefits from a generous decant of 2–3 hours in its youth to let the aromatics unfurl and the texture fully soften. As the wine matures, a shorter decant mainly to remove any sediment will be sufficient.

Producer
Montevertine, located in Radda in Chianti, was founded in the 1960s by Sergio Manetti and quickly became one of the most influential names in Tuscan wine. Choosing to step outside the Chianti Classico DOCG in order to champion pure Sangiovese, Montevertine helped shape the original “Super‑Tuscan” movement and reoriented global perceptions of the grape’s potential. Le Pergole Torte, first produced in the 1970s, became the estate’s flagship and one of Italy’s true cult wines, recognisable for its distinctive artist‑designed labels and its consistently high critical acclaim. Today, under the stewardship of the Manetti family, Montevertine remains a reference point for elegant, terroir‑driven Sangiovese, standing among the most respected producers in all of Tuscany.
