Description

Monteraponi Chianti Classico Il Campitello Riserva 2021 is a beautifully traditional expression of Radda in Chianti, crafted from high‑altitude vineyards and old Sangiovese vines. This single-vineyard Riserva combines depth, precision and elegance, capturing the pure, savory side of Chianti Classico. Il Campitello has become a benchmark wine for those seeking a classic, terroir-driven Tuscan red with real personality and aging potential.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Il Campitello Riserva shows a luminous, medium ruby core with garnet reflections at the rim, signaling both freshness and a serious structure beneath. The nose is refined and expressive, opening with sour cherry, wild strawberry and redcurrant, followed by layers of dried rose, violet, blood orange zest and sweet herbs. Subtle notes of cedar, tobacco leaf, underbrush and a hint of iron-like minerality add complexity as it breathes. On the palate, this is tense, vertical and beautifully fresh, with the hallmark Radda acidity guiding a core of juicy red fruit—maraschino cherry, pomegranate and raspberry—wrapped in fine, chalky tannins. Hints of licorice, savory spice, dried thyme and a gentle earthiness linger through a long, mouthwatering finish. The 2021 vintage offers both approachability and structure; it is already compelling in its youth but will comfortably evolve and gain further nuance over 10–15 years in a good cellar.

Production
Il Campitello is sourced from a single, high-elevation vineyard in Radda in Chianti, where Monteraponi’s terraces sit on poor, rocky soils rich in galestro and alberese limestone. The altitude and cooler microclimate yield naturally low yields, high acidity and slow, even ripening of Sangiovese, with Canaiolo Nero and Colorino lending additional aromatic lift and color. Grapes are typically harvested by hand, parcel by parcel, with rigorous selection in the vineyard and at the winery. Fermentation is carried out with indigenous yeasts in traditional concrete tanks, followed by a long maceration to gently extract tannins and flavor without excess weight. The wine is then aged in large, neutral Slavonian oak botti, allowing it to develop complexity and harmony while preserving the purity of fruit and a clear imprint of the Monteraponi terroir.

Food & Serving
This Chianti Classico Riserva pairs beautifully with classic Tuscan and other Mediterranean dishes: think bistecca alla fiorentina, slow-braised lamb, roast pork with herbs, game birds, rich tomato-based pastas, wild mushroom risotto or aged pecorino and Parmigiano-Reggiano. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic detail and bright acidity. In its youth, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to soften the tannins and allow the bouquet to fully unfurl; as it gains bottle age, a gentle splash-decant just before serving will be sufficient.

Producer
Monteraponi is a historic estate in Radda in Chianti, set on an ancient medieval hamlet perched high in the hills of Chianti Classico. Over the years, the estate has earned a devoted following for its unwaveringly traditional approach and its focus on expressing the high-altitude terroir of Radda with clarity and finesse. Working organically in the vineyards and favoring indigenous grapes, large old oak and minimal intervention in the cellar, Monteraponi has become one of the reference producers for pure, elegant Sangiovese in Tuscany. Wines like Il Campitello Riserva have helped cement the estate’s reputation as a guardian of classic Chianti Classico style—vibrant, savory, ageworthy and unmistakably tied to its place of origin.
