Description
Monte Chiaro Chianti 345 Riserva 2021 ØKO is a refined, organically produced Chianti that captures the elegance and structure of Sangiovese from the hills just outside Siena. Crafted from hand‑harvested grapes, only the best fruit makes it into this Riserva, resulting in a wine with impressive balance between acidity, tannin and ripe fruit. As a Chianti Colli Senesi DOCG Riserva, it offers a modern, detail-driven expression of one of Tuscany’s most historic appellations.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Chianti Riserva shows a deep, vibrant ruby-red color with garnet highlights at the rim, hinting at both concentration and finesse. The nose is expressive and layered, opening with classic violet notes and maraschino cherries, followed by ripe plums, sweet baking spices and a gentle hint of dried herbs.
On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with a beautifully judged structure. Juicy, ripe cherry and plum fruit are framed by fine, firm tannins and a lively, refreshing acidity, giving the wine both energy and depth. Subtle tones of sweet spice from time in large oak (tonneaux) weave through the mid-palate, softening the tannins without overpowering the fruit. The finish is long, savory and precise, suggesting good aging potential over the next 6–10 years, during which the tannins will continue to integrate and the aromatic complexity will deepen.
Production
The vineyards of Montechiaro sit in the rolling hills of Chianti Colli Senesi, just a few kilometers from Siena, where limestone- and clay-based soils, ample sunshine and cooling breezes help Sangiovese develop intense aromas and balanced ripeness. Grapes for the Chianti 345 Riserva are hand-harvested, with strict selection to ensure only the highest-quality bunches are used. In the cellar, the wine is vinified traditionally to preserve varietal character and freshness, followed by 24 months of maturation in large 500 L oak tonneaux. This extended aging in sizeable barrels imparts subtle, sweet spice, polishes the tannins and adds complexity, while allowing the fruit and terroir to remain at the forefront.
Food & Serving
This Chianti Riserva is a natural partner for hearty Tuscan-inspired dishes such as grilled or roasted red meats, Bistecca alla Fiorentina, game dishes like venison or wild boar, and rich, tomato-based ragùs. It also shines with aged hard cheeses—think Parmigiano Reggiano, Pecorino Toscano or other mature, nutty cheeses that complement its savory depth. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatics and structure. Decanting for 45–60 minutes before serving is recommended, especially in its youth, to allow the wine to open fully and soften the tannins.
Producer
Montechiaro is an estate rooted in the historic landscape of Chianti, nestled just 5 km from the medieval city of Siena, with sweeping vineyard views toward the city’s iconic skyline. The winery blends a deep respect for tradition with a belief in modern, sustainable agriculture—here expressed through organic viticulture—and treats winemaking as a form of art as much as a craft. Focused on capturing the highest expression of Chianti Colli Senesi DOCG, Montechiaro has built a reputation for precise, characterful Sangiovese wines that honor the old walls and history surrounding them while showcasing a fresh, youthful spirit in one of Tuscany’s most classic regions.
