Description

Monte Chiaro Brunello di Montalcino 2018 is a classic expression of Sangiovese Grosso from one of Tuscany’s most prestigious hillsides. Crafted in a ripe, balanced vintage, this Brunello combines purity of fruit with the depth and structure that have made the appellation world‑famous. It’s a bottle that speaks clearly of Montalcino’s heritage while offering immediate pleasure and excellent cellaring potential. Its unique appeal lies in the way it marries traditional Brunello character—firm tannins, savory nuance, and lifted acidity—with the generosity of the 2018 vintage. Expect a wine that is both refined and approachable, with a precise sense of place and a focus on elegance over power. Brunello di Montalcino has been one of Italy’s benchmark reds since it gained DOCG status in 1980, and Monte Chiaro continues this lineage with an interpretation that is faithful, modern in its polish, and distinctly Tuscan.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Monte Chiaro Brunello di Montalcino 2018 shows a deep garnet core with brick-red highlights toward the rim, hinting at both concentration and evolving complexity. Swirl the glass and you’ll notice excellent clarity and slow‑moving legs that speak to its structure and extract. The nose opens with ripe red cherries and wild strawberries, followed by dried roses, sweet tobacco, and a touch of leather—hallmarks of well‑made Sangiovese Grosso. Subtle layers of cedar, baking spice, and a hint of underbrush emerge with air, adding depth and a savory edge. On the palate, this Brunello is medium to full-bodied, with a core of red and black cherry fruit framed by vibrant acidity and finely etched tannins. Flavors of sour cherry, plum, and blood orange mingle with notes of dried herbs, crushed violets, and a gentle balsamic undertone. The oak is well-integrated, lending hints of vanilla, clove, and cocoa without overshadowing the fruit. The finish is long and persistent, with lingering mineral and savory notes that invite another sip. While already approachable after a bit of aeration, the 2018 has the structure to age gracefully. Expect it to drink beautifully over the next 8–12 years, gaining further tertiary complexity—leather, forest floor, and dried fig—as the tannins soften and the fruit evolves.

Production
Monte Chiaro’s Brunello di Montalcino 2018 is sourced from estate vineyards in the rolling hills of Montalcino, where Sangiovese Grosso thrives on well‑drained, stony soils rich in galestro (marl) and limestone. These soils, combined with the area’s warm days, cool nights, and steady breezes, help produce grapes with concentrated flavor, vibrant acidity, and fine tannic structure. Harvest is typically carried out by hand, allowing for careful selection of perfectly ripe and healthy clusters in the vineyard. In the cellar, the grapes are gently crushed and fermented in temperature‑controlled tanks, with extended maceration on the skins to extract color, aroma, and tannin in a measured way. After fermentation, the wine is traditionally aged in large oak casks (and in some cases a portion in smaller barrels) for several years, followed by bottle maturation before release. This patient, classical vinification and aging process ensures that the final wine reflects both the character of the vintage and the authenticity of the Montalcino terroir.

Food & Serving
Monte Chiaro Brunello di Montalcino 2018 is an excellent partner for rich, savory dishes that can stand up to its structure and complexity. It shines with classic Tuscan cuisine—think bistecca alla fiorentina, slow-braised beef or lamb, wild boar ragù, and aged Pecorino Toscano. It also works beautifully with roasted game, truffle dishes, mushroom risotto, and hearty pasta with tomato-based or meat sauces. Serve at 16–18°C (60–65°F) to highlight its aromatics and texture. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended, especially in its younger years, to soften the tannins and allow the bouquet to fully open.

Producer
Monte Chiaro is a historic Tuscan estate with deep roots in the hills surrounding Siena, closely tied to the winemaking traditions of the region and particularly to the Sangiovese grape. Over the years, the estate has focused on expressing the purity and elegance of its vineyards through carefully crafted wines, with Brunello di Montalcino standing as a flagship expression. Working with classic Tuscan varieties and traditional techniques, Monte Chiaro has built a reputation for authenticity, balance, and a clear sense of place. Its Brunello bottlings contribute to Montalcino’s standing as one of Italy’s most important fine-wine regions, and the estate is increasingly recognized for producing wines that combine regional typicity with modern precision and consistency.
