Description

Millton Vineyards Libiamo Muscat Gisborne 2020 is a vibrant, characterful white from one of New Zealand’s original organic and biodynamic pioneers. Crafted to be expressive rather than conventional, this Muscat showcases Gisborne’s sun-soaked coastal climate in a wonderfully aromatic, textured style. It’s a wine that bridges classic Old World Muscat charm with New World purity and energy, all wrapped in Millton’s naturally minded, hands-on approach.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Libiamo Muscat 2020 is a bright golden straw with a subtle haze, a gentle nod to its minimal handling and artisanal winemaking. The nose is immediately captivating: lifted notes of orange blossom, jasmine and rose petals mingle with fresh grape, ripe apricot, lemon zest and a touch of honeycomb and spice. On the palate, it’s dry yet intensely aromatic, with a juicy core of citrus and stone fruit framed by floral and gently herbal tones. The texture is generous and slightly waxy, with fine phenolic grip giving structure and length—this isn’t a simple, neutral white, but a layered, personality-driven wine. Fresh acidity keeps everything precise and refreshing, while the finish lingers with notes of mandarin peel, white tea and fragrant flowers. Best enjoyed over the next 3–5 years while its aromatic vibrancy is at its peak, though the texture and structure suggest it will evolve interesting, honeyed complexity with short-term cellaring.

Production
Sourced from Millton’s estate vineyards in Gisborne on New Zealand’s North Island, Libiamo Muscat reflects the region’s warm, maritime climate and fertile, alluvial soils. The vines are farmed organically and biodynamically, encouraging deep-rooted, healthy plants and a true expression of site. Grapes are handpicked at optimal ripeness, then brought to the winery in small batches to preserve aromatics and freshness. Fermentation is conducted with indigenous yeasts, allowing the natural character of Muscat and the vineyard to shine. A period of skin contact is often used to build texture and aromatic complexity, followed by maturation in neutral vessels with minimal intervention and low sulphur additions. The result is a wine that feels alive, authentic and firmly rooted in its place of origin.

Food & Serving
Libiamo Muscat 2020 is a versatile partner at the table, especially with aromatic and subtly spiced cuisine. Think fresh Vietnamese or Thai dishes with lemongrass, ginger and herbs; mezze plates featuring hummus, olives and grilled halloumi; or lightly spiced Middle Eastern chicken and fish. It also works beautifully with soft and semi-soft cheeses, sushi, and dishes featuring citrus, fresh herbs and floral accents. Serve lightly chilled at around 10–12°C to let the aromatics fully express themselves. Decanting for 15–30 minutes can help the wine open up, especially if served young, revealing additional layers of perfume and texture.

Producer
Millton Vineyards, founded by James and Annie Millton in the early 1980s, is widely regarded as one of New Zealand’s benchmark producers for organic and biodynamic winegrowing. Based in Gisborne, they were among the country’s very first to farm without synthetic chemicals and later to gain Demeter biodynamic certification, long before it became a trend. Their vineyards—most notably on the banks of the Te Arai and on the famed Opou and Riverpoint sites—have become reference points for authentic, terroir-driven wines from this warm coastal region. Over the years, Millton has earned an international reputation for individual, soulful wines, particularly from aromatic varieties, helping to redefine what Gisborne can achieve beyond volume production and championing a more thoughtful, sustainable approach to New Zealand wine.
