Description

Milan Nestarec Transcendent Nr. 4 Bio is a boundary‑pushing red from one of the Czech Republic’s most acclaimed natural winemakers. Blending Lemberger (Blaufränkisch), Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) and Weißburgunder (Pinot Blanc), it’s a vivid, featherweight red that sits somewhere between serious wine and pure drinking joy. This cuvée is part of Nestarec’s experimental, terroir‑driven range, showcasing the potential of Velkopavlovická to deliver reds with energy, finesse and character.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Transcendent Nr. 4 Bio typically shows a light to medium ruby hue with a gentle translucence, hinting at its lifted, delicate style. The nose is expressive and playful: crunchy red berries, sour cherry and wild strawberry from the Pinot, darker blue fruits and a subtle spice from Blaufränkisch, and a faint citrusy, floral lift that betrays the Pinot Blanc component. Underneath the fruit, you’ll often find herbal notes, a touch of forest floor and a subtle, natural funk that quickly blows off in the glass. On the palate, this is dry, vibrant and ultra‑drinkable, with juicy acidity and very fine, barely-there tannins. Expect red currant, raspberry and cherry tones layered with a light peppery edge, a touch of savoury earth, and a saline, mouth‑watering finish that keeps you coming back to the glass. The texture is silky and fluid rather than heavy or structured, making it as easy to enjoy slightly chilled as at classic red-wine temperature. While best appreciated in its youth for freshness and verve, a couple of years of cellaring can help knit the components together and bring out a bit more savoury complexity.

Production
The fruit for Transcendent Nr. 4 Bio comes from organically farmed vineyards in the Velkopavlovická sub‑region of Moravia, an area noted for its warm days, cooler nights and loess- and clay‑rich soils over limestone. These conditions allow Blaufränkisch and Pinot to ripen fully while retaining the bright acidity that defines Nestarec’s style. Grapes are hand‑harvested to ensure optimal ripeness and careful selection in the vineyard. In the cellar, Nestarec works with minimal intervention: spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts, gentle extraction to keep tannins fine, and maturation in neutral vessels (such as used barrels or large casks) to preserve fruit purity. The wine is typically bottled unfiltered or lightly filtered, with little or no added sulphur, emphasising authenticity and drinkability over polish.

Food & Serving
This is a superb food wine for lighter, flavourful dishes. Try it with charcuterie, patés and terrines, roasted chicken, pork loin, duck breast, grilled sausages, or Central European classics like schnitzel and roasted root vegetables. It also works beautifully with mushroom dishes, soft-rind cheeses and savoury tarts. Serve slightly chilled, around 14–16°C, to highlight its brightness and aromatics. A brief splash in a carafe or 15–20 minutes open in the glass is usually enough; lengthy decanting is not required and might strip some of its delicate aromatics.

Producer
Milan Nestarec is a leading figure in the new wave of Czech natural wine, based in Moravia’s Velkopavlovická region. Working his family’s vineyards, he has helped put the Czech Republic on the international fine‑wine map with expressive, low‑intervention wines that reflect their place rather than fashion. All vineyards are farmed organically (and often beyond certification), with a strong focus on biodiversity and soil health. In the cellar, Nestarec favours indigenous yeasts, minimal sulphur and a hands‑off philosophy that has earned him a cult following among sommeliers and enthusiasts worldwide. His Transcendent series captures the experimental, boundary‑crossing side of his work and showcases just how exciting Moravian wines can be.
