Description
Michael Teschke Sylvaner Mission 2016 is a characterful white wine from Rheinhessen that demonstrates just how profound and complex Sylvaner can be when treated with absolute dedication in the vineyard. Crafted from old vines and farmed with deep respect for nature, this is not an everyday white, but a thoughtful, nuanced bottle that rewards time and attention. With Teschke having since sold his vineyards, remaining bottles of Mission 2016 are a rare opportunity to experience the singular style of this much‑admired grower.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Sylvaner Mission 2016 typically shows a luminous straw to pale gold colour, reflecting both its age and careful élevage. The nose is refined and multilayered, with notes that might range from ripe pear, quince and yellow apple to subtle citrus zest, white flowers and meadow herbs, often underpinned by a gentle nuttiness and a whisper of wet stone.
On the palate, this wine tends to be dry, textural and quietly powerful, with a fine, integrated acidity that gives it remarkable precision. Expect flavours of stone fruit, apple skin, fennel and fresh herbs, alongside a savoury, mineral depth that speaks clearly of its origin. With some years in bottle already, tertiary nuances such as honey, brioche, hay and dried herbs may be emerging, adding further complexity without sacrificing freshness. Properly stored, the 2016 vintage still has the structure to develop for a few more years, gaining additional nuance and a silkier texture.
Production
Michael Teschke worked his vineyards in Rheinhessen with an almost uncompromising focus on low yields, old vines and a rich, balanced ecosystem. His parcels, rooted in the rolling hills around Gau‑Algesheim, benefit from diverse soils and a mild climate that allows Sylvaner to ripen slowly while retaining acidity. The vines were farmed with minimal intervention and a strong emphasis on biodiversity, giving space to wild plants and insects that helped create naturally healthy vineyards. Harvest was typically done by hand, with rigorous selection of only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes. In the cellar, Teschke favoured a restrained, artisanal approach: gentle pressing, spontaneous fermentations with indigenous yeasts, and patient maturation—often in neutral large barrels or stainless steel—to allow the grape and terroir to speak clearly, without overt oak influence.
Food & Serving
Sylvaner Mission 2016 is a versatile gastronomic white that shines at the table. It pairs beautifully with classic German and Central European dishes such as white asparagus, freshwater fish, schnitzel with lemon, roast chicken and veal in light jus. Its herbal and mineral facets also make it superb alongside vegetable‑driven cuisine: risottos with spring greens, fennel or peas, grilled zucchini, mushroom dishes and soft cheeses. For seafood, think grilled trout, river fish, scallops or simply prepared shellfish. Serve at around 10–12 °C to highlight its freshness and detail. A short decant of 20–30 minutes, or simply opening the bottle in advance, helps the wine unfurl its more subtle layers of aroma and texture.
Producer
Weingut Michael Teschke, based in Gau‑Algesheim in Rheinhessen, earned a devoted following for its uncompromising, vineyard‑first philosophy. Teschke became a reference point for how expressive Sylvaner and Portugieser can be when grown on old vines and farmed with meticulous, nature‑focused care. His naturally tended vineyards, where he famously lived almost in symbiosis with his ancient vines and the surrounding flora and fauna, produced wines of quiet intensity and remarkable nuance. Though he made the difficult decision to sell his vineyards in 2021 due to the imbalance between labour and financial return, his remaining bottlings stand as important benchmarks for the potential of Rheinhessen’s heritage varieties and are highly regarded by wine lovers who seek authenticity and terroir‑driven character.
