Description
Mazzei Siepi 2019 in a rare 3L double magnum format is a benchmark Super Tuscan that beautifully captures the balance and class of this outstanding vintage. A 50/50 blend of Sangiovese and Merlot from one of Tuscany’s most historic estates, it combines richness, freshness, and refinement in a way that feels both modern and deeply rooted in tradition. This 2019 release is widely regarded as one of the standout editions in a retrospective spanning over 26 vintages, with only around 35,000 bottles produced in total – and far fewer in large formats like this.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Siepi 2019 shows a deep, vibrant ruby color with youthful purple reflections, particularly striking in this larger-format bottle that preserves its intensity and brightness. The nose opens with pure black cherry, plum, and wild berries, followed by layers of violet, dark chocolate, graphite, and sweet baking spices, with a subtle mineral edge and a hint of tobacco and cedar as it unfolds in the glass.
On the palate, the 2019 is both generous and finely structured: ripe dark fruit is wrapped in a velvety texture, while the Sangiovese brings lift, acidity, and savory depth. Polished, ripe tannins gently frame the wine, giving it grip without harshness, and there’s a beautiful interplay between juiciness and tension that keeps the finish long and precise. Notes of blackcurrant, morello cherry, spice, and wet stone linger. In double magnum, Siepi 2019 has excellent aging potential – easily 15–20+ years from vintage, with the large format extending its evolution and preserving freshness, complexity, and harmony over time.
Production
Siepi comes from a single historic estate vineyard in the heart of Tuscany, positioned on rolling hills with optimal southern and southwestern exposures and well-drained, mixed clay and limestone soils that naturally limit yields and intensify flavor. The site benefits from warm daytime temperatures and cooler nights throughout the growing season, conditions that the 2019 vintage enjoyed in particularly ideal form: healthy, full clusters, slow, even ripening, and pristine fruit. Grapes are harvested by hand in small crates, parcel by parcel, to ensure optimal ripeness for both Merlot and Sangiovese. In the cellar, the varieties are vinified separately in temperature-controlled tanks, with careful extraction to preserve elegance and aromatic purity. After fermentation, the wine is aged in small French oak barrels (a proportion new) for around 18 months, allowing the components to marry and gain complexity before blending and bottling, with the large-format double magnums receiving especially meticulous selection and long-term aging intent.
Food & Serving
Siepi 2019 in 3L is a natural centerpiece for the table and pairs beautifully with refined, flavorful dishes such as bistecca alla fiorentina, braised short ribs, roasted lamb with rosemary, or slow-cooked beef ragù over pappardelle. It also works wonderfully with aged Tuscan pecorino, truffle dishes, game birds, and rich mushroom preparations. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). Given the wine’s youth and structure, especially in double magnum, decanting is recommended: 1–2 hours for more purity and aromatic lift, or up to 3 hours if you prefer the tannins softer and the texture more enveloping.
