Description
Mazzei Chianti Classico Riserva Ser Lapo 2022 is a refined tribute to one of Tuscany’s most historic wine families and to Ser Lapo Mazzei, the figure credited with the first known written use of the name “Chianti.” Crafted by Castello di Fonterutoli, a Mazzei estate that has been in the family since 1435, this Riserva combines heritage, precision, and the character of classic Chianti Classico with a modern touch of Merlot.
Tasting Notes
Expect a deep ruby-red color with lively brightness in the glass. The bouquet is typically expressive and polished, with aromas of ripe cherries, red berries, violets, Mediterranean herbs, and subtle spice, lifted by hints of oak, tobacco, and earthy Tuscan notes.
On the palate, the wine is structured yet approachable, with the savory acidity and fine tannins that define Sangiovese, rounded out by the softer texture and dark-fruit nuance of Merlot. It should show good depth, balance, and a long, elegant finish, with enough structure to develop well over the next several years.
Production
Produced in Tuscany’s Chianti Classico zone, the wine reflects the region’s hillside terroir, where soils, altitude, and warm days with cooler nights help preserve freshness and aromatic complexity. The grapes are typically harvested by hand at optimal ripeness to ensure quality selection, then vinified with careful temperature control and maceration to extract color, flavor, and refined tannins. Aging in oak helps shape the Riserva’s structure and adds complexity without overpowering the fruit.
Food & Serving
This is a natural partner for Tuscan and Mediterranean cuisine, especially grilled steak, roast lamb, game birds, pasta with rich meat sauces, porcini risotto, and aged Pecorino. Serve it at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for about 30–60 minutes if you’d like to open up the aromas and soften the tannins.
Producer
Castello di Fonterutoli is one of the most respected names in Chianti Classico, with the Mazzei family’s winemaking history stretching back nearly six centuries. The estate is widely recognized for helping define the modern quality style of the region while staying deeply rooted in its traditions. Over time, Mazzei has earned a strong international reputation for producing wines of elegance, authenticity, and consistent excellence.
