Description
Maximin Grünhaus Riesling Schloss 2023 is a refined expression of Mosel-Saar-Ruwer Riesling, balancing crystalline freshness with understated elegance. Sourced from the historic Maximin Grünhaus estate, this white wine offers an authentic taste of one of Germany’s most storied Riesling terroirs. It’s a versatile, premium bottling that captures the classic interplay of fruit, minerality, and vibrant acidity that has made the region world-famous.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 Schloss Riesling shines with a pale straw to light lemon hue, edged with green reflections that hint at its youthful energy. The nose is immediately engaging, with notes of lime zest, green apple, white peach, and crisp pear layered over delicate floral tones of white blossom and elderflower. Underneath, a fine slate-driven minerality adds a cool, stony dimension, with a whisper of wet rock and citrus peel.
On the palate, this Riesling is precise and lively, driven by bright acidity that keeps everything focused and refreshing. Expect juicy citrus—lime, grapefruit, and lemon—supported by ripe stone fruit and a touch of green herbs, all carried on a sleek, almost saline mineral backbone. The wine finishes long and clean, with a mouthwatering, subtly off-dry impression that feels perfectly balanced rather than sweet. Enjoyable now for its youthful vibrancy, it has the structure and acidity to develop added complexity over the next 5–8 years, gaining more nuance of honey, spice, and petrol with time in bottle.
Production
The Maximin Grünhaus estate sits on steep, slate-rich slopes along the Ruwer, a cool tributary of the Mosel, where vines benefit from excellent drainage, reflected heat from the stony soils, and a long, slow ripening season. The combination of Devonian slate, forest influence, and marked diurnal temperature swings produces Rieslings with both aromatic intensity and finely etched acidity. Grapes for the Schloss bottling are carefully selected and harvested by hand to ensure optimal ripeness and pristine fruit, often in multiple passes through the vineyard. In the cellar, fermentation typically takes place in stainless steel and/or traditional large old oak casks with a gentle, low-intervention approach, allowing the natural character of the site to shine through. The result is a wine that is pure, precise, and transparently expressive of its cool-climate origin.
Food & Serving
This Riesling is highly food-friendly and particularly well-suited to fresh, vibrant cuisine. Pair it with sushi and sashimi, ceviche, or simply prepared white fish, as well as lightly spiced Asian dishes, Thai salads, or Vietnamese spring rolls. It also works beautifully with goat cheese, young soft cheeses, poultry, and dishes featuring fresh herbs, citrus, or light cream sauces. Serve well-chilled at around 8–10°C (46–50°F) to highlight its tension and aromatics. A brief 15–20 minutes in the glass or a short, gentle decant can help the aromas open up, especially in the first year or two after release.
