Description
Maximin Grünhaus Riesling Schloss 2023 is a finely etched Mosel-Saar-Ruwer Riesling that captures the cool, slate-driven elegance of the Ruwer valley. Sourced from the estate’s historic monopole vineyards surrounding Schloss Grünhaus, it delivers both precision and generosity in the glass. Previously known as “Riesling Monopol,” this cuvée continues the tradition of drawing exclusively from the estate’s famed single vineyards, now united under the Schloss name in homage to the cellars where the wines quietly mature.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the Riesling Schloss shows a pale lemon color with green highlights, hinting at its youth and vibrant acidity. The nose is immediately marked by the signature Grünhaus slate character: smoky mineral notes, flint, and a fine herbal spice, gradually giving way to crystalline fruit. As it opens, aromas of citrus zest, lime, mirabelle plum and vineyard peach emerge, framed by a cool, stony freshness and a subtle, almost savory undertone.
On the palate, this is juicy and finely tuned, with a lively but well-integrated acidity that gives the wine both tension and drinkability. Citrus and stone-fruit flavors are layered over a salty-mineral backbone, with the Ruwer’s trademark coolness and lift running through the finish. The texture is sleek yet mouthfilling, leaving a long, precise, and delicately spicy aftertaste. Enjoyable in its youth for its energy and purity, it also has the structure to evolve beautifully over the next 5–8 years, gaining complexity and depth while preserving its vibrant core.
Production
The Riesling Schloss is sourced from the three grand vineyards Abtsberg, Herrenberg and Bruderberg, all steep, south-facing slate slopes that rise directly above Schloss Grünhaus in the cool Ruwer valley. These sites, held in sole ownership by the von Schubert family, are rooted in weathered blue and grey Devonian slate, which imparts the wine’s distinctive mineral and smoky character. The grapes are hand-harvested parcel by parcel to ensure optimal ripeness and selection, often in multiple passes through the vineyards. In the cellar, fermentation takes place slowly with Riesling-friendly yeasts in a mix of traditional large oak casks and stainless steel, allowing the terroir to shine without heavy intervention. The wine is then matured on its fine lees in the historic slate cellars beneath Schloss Grünhaus, gaining polish and textural finesse before bottling.
Food & Serving
This Riesling is a versatile partner at the table, pairing beautifully with delicately prepared dishes such as ceviche, sashimi, steamed white fish, or poached salmon with herb beurre blanc. Its vibrant acidity and mineral drive also complement classic German cuisine like trout ‘Müllerin Art’, light pork dishes, roasted poultry, and fresh goat or young cow’s milk cheeses. Slight sweetness and high acidity make it an excellent match for mildly spiced Asian dishes, especially Thai or Vietnamese salads with citrus and herbs. Serve well-chilled, ideally at 8–10°C (46–50°F). A brief 15–30 minutes in the decanter or an oversized white wine glass helps the wine shed its initial reduction and allows the fruit and slate aromas to fully unfurl.
